We're playing this piece currently at my high school and I’ve been listening to recordings. Hands down this is the best one. They actually put soul into it. All the other bands that've played this play the notes, not the actual music. You see the same problem in jazz ensembles too. Thank god for HBCUs that know how to actually play with soul and energy that so many other ensembles lack 🙏 🙏

As a band director, I’ve watched SEVERAL videos of different ensembles playing this. THIS is the most culturally accurate. There are other groups that have great things happening, but artistically, this (and the symphony version second), is more like that organist at church walking it down.
