Harley Factory Cylinder Heads ARE NOT Created Equal

Показать описание
Stock Harley Heads do vary by years but fortunately the one the most important changes made it all the way to the end of production. Early Twin cam heads weren't bad but they had some issues we would of rather done without. Carbon build up was an issue over time, as carbon build it up it choked off the flow on an already somewhat poorly designed head. Harley-Davidson took a pay out of the Buell play book and applied it to the stock harley heads on the twin cam engines.

The head quality from girlfriend to girlfriend is not created equally either.

A lot of that carbon on the exhaust valve is because the head breather dump into the throttle body. Route that crap to a catch can you’ll be glad you did

Finally, something that makes me glad I have an 05 HD.

Took a friend's 2002 Electra glide from 88 inch to 98 inch 10:1 compression, Wood 555 cams, I found 2014 heads with electric compression releases with 2000 miles. Mild port, opened bowls for 1.90 Manley intakes and 1.625 exhaust, stock springs. Air cleaner and pipes/mufflers upgrade. Brian at Valley Racing in Beacher IL tuned the bike, Perfect! Over a 100 horsepower and over 110lb-ft torque at the tire. Later heads are the way to go! The compression releases hooked to the start solenoid didn't work. Dropped compression to 80 psi cranking. 185 psi wasn't an issue w/o compression releases so disconnected.

Glad to have a 2015, I was able to run S&S 585s and keep the stock springs, I did do a little hand porting just to match my intake manifold.

I've sprayed water into the intake while the motor was running to kind of steam clean the heads, valves, pistons and cylinders.

Thanks for the great explanation. My 2005 1200 Sportster Roadster was advertised as having "Buell XB heads and cams". Now I know what the difference was. One guy on a blog improved his 1200 from 57 HP to 75 HP without opening the engine up...just bolt-on stuff.

very cool info. im running 02 heads, and have already dumped money into them well before the 05 changes. They work. At this point in my life, that is good enuff🤣

Love all the knowledge you share.
Just put woods tw555 cams, little clean up in the heads and replaced 96 to 103 jugs.
Love the difference, more pull in 3000rpm and up.

Where was this information 20 years ago, when I bought my bike? Or 5 years ago when I had it rebuilt? I treat my TC 88 as an "advanced Knucklehead", it burns a little oil, it's not fast but it runs and sounds great and I love it😊
By the way, I love your videos, I'm not into performance stuff, but still they are very well done and interesting!

Excellent information! I'm going to stick to my EVO as long as I can, but if I run across a great deal on a TC it is good to know the pros & cons of the early years vs later. I'm aware of the problems with the crankshafts and bearings on the later years, but had no idea they changed the heads for the better in 05. As an EvO guy it seems the best TC combo would be an early lower end with upgraded heads? Longevity, reliability and ease and cost of maintenance are my primary concerns.

Awesome and informative video, bud! I have an 07 TC motor, 1450 and I hear that adding an EBS (exterior breathing system to the motor can cause carbon build up to burn off plus it will make the motor run cooler and more efficiently. This is important because the twin cam design tends to run a bit hotter than its recommended. You can run tubing off of the exaughst ports through the backer plate of the air breather, join them together with a Y and send it down to a vented catch can. I learned this from DK Custome, a great channel, like yours.

I don't know about all that, but what happened to the overloaded shelf we all got used to seeing in the background? Did it finally crack?

Excellent video thanks!! I've installed S&S 510C cams in my chopped 2006 Softail Standard, high flow intake & exhaust, tuned. Getting great performance. A really snappy bike with jackrabbit starts. Your video answers some questions that help to understand why my bike performs so well against older bikes.

Put the correct ratio of Marvel oil in the fuel really helps. greatly reduces the carbon build up.
