This is what happens when you turn on a Pipe Organ

Chords: I've added subtitles to the video that shows you what chords I play and when. The pattern is a simple C - Eb - F - C transition with some leading notes.

(no association, I just googled it)

The St. Paul's pipe organ, in Hamilton New Zealand, is a tracker organ, this means all the keys are physically connected to the control sliders on the pipes. The only electrical parts of the instrument are the lights and the blower providing the air pressure. This means, that when the organ is turned on or off, I can keep the pipes open to the increasing or decreasing air pressure as the blower starts up or powers down.

This creates a super cool effect! It means you can hear certain pipes increase in sound as their required operating pressure is reached, first the smaller ones and finally the biggest ones.

Also yes, I've played this start-up effect during for a service musical outro interlude. It got a lot of puzzled looks and head-turns as you might expect haha

Disclaimer: The organ is not damaged by doing this, naturally varying temperatures and air humidity throughout the year have a much greater effect on the tuning of the pipes.

Imagine if these were a new start-up and shut-down sound of any new Operating System, game console, space/starship, etc., just how epic would that be to hear these on start-up and shutdown. eh? 😃

That is so cool, I like the way that the few remaining smaller pipes keep speaking right till the very end.

I've never heard anything like this, so eerie! I was organist for many years when I was young, mainly got to play smaller-sized instruments with about 20 ranks total and I've never heard this effect to anywhere near this extent.

Heck with Passacaglias and fugues! Let’s go with Pneumatic Variations in D minor!

That's one of the most unsettling things I've ever heard! They should totally use an effect like that in a horror movie...

Anyone familiar with the “START/RUN” sequence on a certain tonewheel-generated Organ...? I can’t help hearing a big similarity...!

Why would you betray a pipe organ by turning on it?

Hi, I'm interested in purchasing a license (or at least getting permission) to use this effect as part of my music mix. How may I contact you?
