Patients frequently ask me am I overweight? "Am I of normal weight?" "Am I obese?" or "Am I fat?" I will show you how to use a body mass index calculator. I will explain how doctors look at weight and how we calculate the body mass index or BMI as it is known for short. This is a simple calculation utilizing weight and height. It tells whether your underweight, of normal or healthy weight, overweight or in one of the obesity categories. The BMI however has limitations which I will review. The body mass index is not appropriate for certain people; I will explain this. The BMI is very relevant with our current obesity epidemic. I will tell you what you should weigh and discuss how obesity affects health. I discuss the health effects of obesity. The take-home message is that you should take steps to achieve a healthy BMI.

In my experience as a physician, those with elevated BMI who are heavily muscled “athletes” are not at optimal health and should not be excluded. Bodybuilders and pro athletes more often than not are taking performance enhancing drugs to help them look and perform a certain way. This is just a fact of life that no one wants to admit or confirm. It’s not healthy and the stats confirm this. Heavily muscled individuals with BMI over 30 are not healthy and should not be exempt. The WHO does not make this distinction and neither should physicians

Excellent video! Since the trend seems to be to find a replacement for the BMI, and appreciating the vast range of individual variation that needs to be taken into consideration by any far reaching system, I would like to suggest an idea which I call the FAT, or the Fixed Adiposity Tolerance index. One advantage of my system is that it incorporates an external, as well as an internal component.

I don’t know how you will become aware of when you have reached your individual tolerance, but for me it happened that day in the karate studio.

My instructor could have pointed out that I had reached his Fixed Adiposity Tolerance for me, but instead he just said, Dr. J, you are getting F.A.T.! :-)

I do not listen to the BMI fully. I am about 5'7 5'8 and and currently weight between 195-200. Which is overweight. But the body mass index calculator is telling me that I should be about 130. I am a very stocky person naturally, muscular underneath all that fat. And I know that 130 is far far too low. That would almost be a very dangerous weight for me. I am pretty active and do landscaping for work moving bricks all day.

I am 5'8, 133Lbs, and can see most of my abs (most of the time). I work in the heat all day every day, so I'm fit (maxxed out the treadmill stress test, 12min, no problem at all). I used to weigh 235Lbs, so I've dropped over 100Lbs total. All that stated, , my BMI is around 21. 🙄🙄🙄🙄 If I get much thinner I'll disappear; I wear size 28in waistline jeans for God's Lol, I know one of the limitations is athletes and bodybuilders, and I'm neither, but I think 10hrs/day doing manual labor in the heat might qualify.
