The Tennessee State House voted 72-25 to expel Nashville Rep. Justin Jones and 69-26 to expel Memphis Rep. Justin Pearson. Gloria Johnson, a fellow Democrat who protested narrowly, avoided expulsion. Democratic lawmakers rebuked Republican members of the state's House of Representatives for what they claimed was a racially motivated move to oust the two youngest Black legislators. The move threatened to strip more than 200,000 Tennesseans of their elected representatives and mark just the fourth time since the end of the Civil War when the House ousted sitting lawmakers.

The allegations are that three Democratic State Legislators in Tennessee took part in a protest inside the Tennessee State Capital, violating all of the quorum rules. They brought thousands of people into and around the State Capital Building, demanding that the legislators vote for an assault weapon ban. However, the problem is that the Tennessee Constitution Article 2 Section 12 says the House can set its own rules and punish members for disorderly behavior, and a member can be expelled with a 2/3 vote if he or she has brought disorder and dishonor to the House of Representatives, by shouting without recognition, and has disrupted the House of Representatives by their actions.
