Michael Hutchence was born January 22, 1960 in Hong Kong to parents of Australian citizenship. His family moved back to Australia in 1972 and while in school, he met Andrew Farriss who sparked his interest in music. Michael's parents divorced in 1975 and Mrs Hutchence moved her clan to Hollywood, CA. The following year, Michael returned to Australia and looked up Andrew who was now playing in a band with two more musical Farriss brothers, John and Tim. Then the Farriss family moved from Sydney to Perth, so the band followed them in 1978. One of their roadies came up with the "In Excess" band name which was shortened to INXS which was pronounced the same. They released their first single "Simple Simon" in 1979 and then toured extensively, honing their chops until recording "The One Thing" which became their American chart debut that peaked at #30. They released their first American LP "Shabooh Shoobah" and then ran into Nile Rodgers who offered to produce their fourth LP and had a minor hit with "Original Sin" a #58 pop hit. Turning to producer Chris Thomas who helmed the "Listen Like Thieves" LP got them their first major US hit with "What You Need". They stayed with Thomas for their next LP "Kick" and were jamming in Hong Kong when they came up with the riff for "Need You Tonight" then went into a local studio to record the song. Released as a single on October 24, 1987 it took 14 weeks to reach the #1 spot. I was saddened by his unexpected death on November 22, 1997. I loved "Elegantly Wasted" a really catchy tune by a great band and a lead singer who was just as charismatic as fellow bad boy, Mick Jagger.

Micheal & the guys are real gentleman if u ever met them back in the days.
I saw them play at a party before they got big.
U never would have imagined them concouring the world.
Just a bunch of teens having fun.

I wore out my first copy of Kick(on cassette) in 1987 as a high school senior/brand new college freshman) on my Walkman while taking the bus to and from school every day(not mentioning the HUGE crush I had on Michael Hutchence!). I bought it on CD and now I have all their entire albums saved on Amazon Prime Music. I loved this(and all) INXS' albums and you did a bang up job on "Need You Tonight/Mediate" Disco Cat!

This extended play is really good, brings back memories of the 80's when MTV was in it best years, and I was on finishing up a second tour of active duty in the ARMY.

This is the best mashup song to date in rock 'n roll history. I really miss this band. Great tunes and great memories during HS and first few years in college, listening to their music. And gone way too soon.

My God, this album was everywhere in '87. I was 13 and my older brother made me a cassette copy of his cassette copy. Played it constantly. What a great decade to come of age.

Kick is a classic album. I was 15 in 1987 and recall putting on the vinyl and dropping the needle and hearing "Guns in the sky" and must have listened to the entire album10 times back to back and to this day, still love it.

For anyone asking, here's the "Mediate" lyrics: Hallucinate
Desegregate
Mediate
Alleviate
Try not to hate
Love your mate
Don't suffocate on your own hate
Designate your love as fate
A one world state
As human freight
The number eight
A white black state
A gentle trait
The broken crate
A heavy weight
Or just too late
Like pretty Kate has sex ornate
Now devastate
Appreciate
Depreciate
Fabricate
Emulate
The truth dilate
Special date
The animal we ate
Guilt debate
The edge serrate
A better rate
The youth irate
Deliberate
Fascinate
Deviate
Reinstate
Liberate
To moderate
Recreate
Or detonate
Annihiliate
Atomic fate
Mediate
Clear the state
Activate
Now radiate
A perfect state
Food on plate
Gravitate
The Earth's own weight
Designate your love as fate
At ninety-eight we all rotate
Hallucinate
Desegregate
Mediate
Alleviate
Try not to hate
Love your mate

Liked this song when first released, but never got into them until a music friend had (free) front row center seats to see them in August 1997, so ended up going since never having seats like that before, and they absolutely blew me away then became one of my favorite bands. Michael committed suicide 3 1/2 months later which was confusing and disturbing after seeing what appeared to be someone who had everything going for him most aspire to their entire life. I feel very lucky to have had that experience and memory. But very sad.
