Charles Rudd Distinguished Public Lectures 2022

The Charles Rudd Distinguished Public Lectures 2022 took place on 17 February (Thursday) at the Stephen Riady Auditorium @ NTUC. Themed around the circular and digital economy, it was jointly organised by IES and the World Federation of Engineering Organizations. It also commemorates the World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development - declared by UNESCO as an international day on every 4th of March to highlight engineers and their achievements.

Her Excellency Ms Iwona Piórko, European Union Ambassador to Singapore, was the Distinguished Speaker. In her address, she spoke about the increased efforts by the EU to tackle climate change, recognising the potential of the digital revolution in accelerating the paradigm shift in line with the European Green Deal, and the common priority shared by the Singapore Green Plan 2030 and the European Green Deal to shift from linear to circular economic growth.

Three thought-provoking lectures were delivered by Ms Sheila Remes, Vice President for Environmental Sustainability at Boeing, Dr Darian McBain, Chief Sustainability Officer at the Monetary Authority of Singapore, and Prof Cheong Koon Hean, Chairman for the Centre for Liveable Cities (MND) and the Lee Kuan Yew Centre for Innovative Cities (SUTD).

They were joined by Ms Susanna Kass, Data Centre Advisor for the UNSDG programme and Energy Fellow at Stanford University, and Mr Jonathan Kua, Senior Vice President and Head, Group Sustainability at ST Engineering for a discussion panel related to the theme of the Lecture and how the various industry sectors were, or could, work towards achieving their sustainability goals.

The panel was moderated by Prof Seeram Ramakrishna, FREng, FIES, Chairman of the NUS Circular Economy Taskforce and IES Sustainable Manufacturing Technical Committee.
