The new Passat is now exclusively an estate car. Just launched - I drove it yesterday. I check out the practicality, features and how it drives in this video. Here's some quick facts on the car:

Price as tested £41,705

1.5-litre EVO2 Turbo 4cyl
Petrol Mild Hybrid
7-speed DSG Auto

Thank you for putting the standard spec and options on the screen. VERY helpful.

And good to see adaptive cruise as standard on a VAG car!

Love the Passat estate, we haven’t had these in the states for years.

Nice colour, wish you could get a MK8 Golf GTI Clubsport in this light greenish colour

I very much like this new Passat. The colour on this one is particularly nice, IMO. While it's certainly no performance car, I guess it's adequate, although fully-loaded I know as a former Superb owner, you are almost certainly going to wish for more power when going up hills or overtaking. In a Golf, this 1.5 engine would be more than adequate. In a Passat, I'd prefer a 200bhp petrol engine. Before diesel became the devil, the higher power diesel engine was the powerplant of choice in the Passat and Superb.

Anyway, the Passat may not be all the car my family would want, but it's certainly all the car we need. Makes sense that it's only offered as an estate, IMO. Passat was never a sports saloon nor a limo, or IMO, even a budget limo like the Superb. And I think you made the case for the estate over the SUV very well. The estate feels more planted on the road. And I agree that the SUV being bigger and heavier is pretty much only a perception rather than a fact. Of course, there are exceptions. I think there are more large SUVs than large cars.

Overall, in the market as it is, I think this actually represents good value. Big and roomy. Economical. Etc. After watching Rory Reid's review, I was expecting this car to be significantly more expensive. Good to see VW keeping it real. And the fact is you can turn up almost anywhere in a car like this and fit in, while not suffering the negative connotations that comes with driving a big SUV. Not a car for Monaco, but in the UK it's very classless, and semi-premium. Definitely all the car anyone would need, and for circa 40 grand I think it makes a lot of sense.

How does the road noise compare to the tiguan? Could you have a conversation with rear seat passengers in both at highway speeds?

@BrownCarGuy you mention this is the 15 inch screen in the video but its actually the 12.9 inch fitted, no?

But is the boot floor flat when the seats are folded?

I like the half-leather half-velour seats, but they wouldn't work well for my family. At least they're not black.

£38-41k how, i do not see you get much extra just a tad better build but even that fallen away with reliability. you get a dacia jogger 7 seat car a huge car just for £17-18k but you can get it for less. more car for a lot less than half the price and ive seen the quality inside one and they pretty good so i do not feel getting vw you getting £15-17k more car

all these dsg boxes just why. you need to re mortgage your house when they go bad and what about people buying used cars down the line they by used well most is because they cannot afford new so when it goes wrong then guess what the car scrapped because it cost more than the car to fix. standard auto or manual sod the double clutch what will go wrong and cost a fortune to fix.
