To our friends who are not native Greek speakers and who are left confused despite seeing the amazing translations posted in the comments section: this song is indeed difficult to understand, as it is a part of “Axion Esti” (“Worthy It Is”), a quite long poem by the Greek poet and Nobel Prize winner Odysseas Elytis. This poem is about the spiritual journey of a male hero, who, trying to reach an ideal that will complete him and make him whole, faces obstacles set by enemies. The difficulty in understanding the text lies in that, what the hero seeks has various forms throughout the poem (some of them being: freedom, hope, a woman, Greece, religion), and the enemies that stand on his way also come in many forms: The Italian/German troops invading Greece during the Second World War, Greek politicians, human corruption, his own family, the darkness inside him). The hero then has an epiphany, that his real enemy is his binary, child-like “black or white” way of thinking (splitting people into good/evil, friends/enemies, etc.). With this newfound knowledge, he becomes a different person. He also sees erotic love as a means to overcome his old way of thinking (because, in his mind, the male/female union has the power to destroy binarism). This is just a small analysis for us to understand (or still not understand :D) the lines “they bombarded me” and “Mother far away, my everlasting Rose”.
