“History is on our side...” Jaishankar explains how India will make it to UNSC permanent membership

External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar on August 31 explained how India will make it to the United Nations Security Council permanent membership. He said keeping India out of the permanent membership of the United Nations Security Council will only call the credibility of the international organisation into question. He said, “The present United Nations architecture was formed in the 1940s. There were 50 member countries of the UN back then, and now there are more than 200 countries. So there will be changes...The world's largest country in terms of population and the fifth-largest economy cannot be kept out of this and if it is kept out, there will be questions raised on the credibility of the United Nations. History is on our side, and the UN will change. Forces who are blocking it will keep trying but eventually it will happen.”

आपने बिल्कुल ठीक कहा जो एक बार पहले सीट पर बैठ जाता है वह वहाँ से उठना तो दूर किसी और को उसके समीप देखकर भी अनदेखा करता है। भारत किसी को सीट से उठाकर स्वयं बैठने के लिये प्रयास नहीं कर रहा। भारत की नीति इस पर स्पष्ट है कि सीट का ही विस्तारीकरण किया जाये ताकि अन्य लोग जिन्हें योग्यता के होते हुए भी अनदेखा किया जा रहा है वह भी सीट पर बैठ सके । १९४० के दशक और २०२३ के बीच UN के सदस्य यदि ५० से २०० यानि चार गुना हो चुके हैं तो UNSC के स्थायी सदस्य केवल ५ ही कैसे रह सकते हैं जबकि पिछ्ले ८० वर्षों में वैश्विक परिवेश में वृहत् स्तर पर परिवर्तन हुए हैं। भारत आज विश्व की ५वीं सबसे बड़ी अर्थव्यवस्था बन चुका है । साथ ही अफ्रीका समेत दक्षिण अमेरिका के कई देश भी आगे बढ़ रहे हैं।
