Youtube's COPPA Update: 3 Years Later

►January 6th 2023 is the 3rd anniversary of Youtube's COPPA Update. Made for kids/not made for kids content was supposedly being enforced by the FTC, fining offenders up to $42,350. Let me know what you guys think about this situation in the comments below.

As a sonic fan, I still find this update particularly infuriating. Not just because they’re unfairly marking clips from the games and movies as MFK, but also because they’re doing the same thing to animators who are just trying to make some really good content, but are being screwed over.

COPPA was the largest mistake ever. They have YouTube Kids but don't care about it at all and insted take the punishment on YouTube Proper.

It's always terrible, I can't watch any videos of movies, TV shows, or video games that I played or watching because COPPA screw the comments not allowing us to interact

It didn't help that the way YouTube added this coppa feature to their website is so broken as well, it's also annoying to see some people's videos become mfk, even channels that haven't updated their channels years after this was added in.
I'm still glad I made my channel not for kids.

I thought the world was going to end when I was 11 years old cuz of this update. I even cried myself to sleep 2 times cuz I was scared of the fines and thought how the videos would be marked for kids would mean they would get deleted. But obviously non of that stuff happened and we've all pretty much gotten use to everything.

While YouTube has made its AI more functional, there's still both ethical and practical issues with this update. Let's say someone uploaded a clip from the movie, The Incredibles, and it was primarily for people to share their experiences with the movie in the comments. While the movie is appropriate for children to watch, the director says it doesn't have a particular demographic. YouTube thinks "oh it's Disney so, made for kids". Not only does this go against the director's vision, but it sends a message that an age demographic that is not allowed on the site to begin with, has more power than the rest of the site's population.

There's also an incident among the franchise, Sonic the Hedgehog. It has a large fanbase of multiple demographics including children and adults. BalenaProductions made a trailer to an upcoming film featuring Sonic characters. The video is not intended for kids, it is intended for older audiences as evident by its adult oriented humor. Sonic the Hedgehog is a general audience franchise with no specific demographic to target to. But because YouTube believes it to be oriented to children, many animations with Sonic, filled with adult-oriented writing, are both demonetized and set as "made for kids". Balena and other Sonic creators have appealed their videos multiple times and were all rejected. The very website that calls itself "YouTube" with its motto "broadcast yourself" somehow doesn't trust its own creators.

Overall, the "Made for Kids" update still largely damages animation channels, and it demonetized plenty of children's-oriented channels that were seeking jobs and content to provide. It gives power to a mega-corporation to determine what demographic likes what video as opposed to the creator itself. It cements the myth that animation is the equivalent of "children's" genre.

YouTube has a kids program and yet they have to make their main platform into a daycare. However adult animations like happy tree friends and stuff get marked as made for kids which I still see around. I've even seen the occasional family guy videos marked as made for kids.

It was strange they even marked the shock video Walk the Dinosaur for kids which was crazy the dinosaurs were pretty doing you know what each other.
