Outlast is a first-person survival horror video game developed and published by Red Barrels. The game revolves around a freelance investigative journalist, Miles Upshur, who decides to investigate a remote psychiatric hospital named Mount Massive Asylum, located deep in the mountains of Lake County, Colorado. The downloadable content, Outlast: Whistleblower, centers on Waylon Park, the man who led Miles there in the first place.

Outlast was released for Microsoft Windows on September 4, 2013, PlayStation 4 on February 4, 2014 and for Xbox One on June 19, 2014. Linux and OS X versions were later released on March 31, 2015.[1] A Nintendo Switch version was released in February 2018.

Outlast received generally positive reviews, with praise for its atmosphere, horror elements, and gameplay. As of October 2016, the game has sold four million copies overall.[2]

A sequel, Outlast 2, was released on April 25, 2017. A comic book series set between Outlast and Outlast 2, The Murkoff Account, was released in July of the same year.

Outlast 1: Graphics aren’t bad for a game that’s almost a decade old. I found this one scarier as the asylum’s corridors made finding your objective easier by limiting the number of directions you could go but also made chases more tense because of the same reason. A horror game set in an insane Asylum is cliche as it gets but it works perfectly and the execution was really impressive for an indie team so I don’t mind. The characters and antagonists were also incredibly memorable as they each got good screen time, unlike Knoth in 2.

Outlast 2: Better graphics (almost photorealistic at times, especially the school sections). The night-vision effect rivals that of COD: Modern Warfare (2019). Great effect. I personally didn’t find the desert setting or the characters interesting in 2. I didn’t find it as tense and found it more frustrating than scary during my first play through as the openness of the setting made it unclear were you had to go at times. You basically have to follow whatever light source is available and head towards it 99% of the time… problem is, unlike Outlast 1 which had more interior lights during chase sequences, the outdoor setting means you’re constantly in night-vision mode, so the light sources that you need to head towards don’t stick out as much. This combined with the more open setting made me die sooo many times. It would have been nice to have multiple paths that eventually funneled the player into the single path that the devs intended you to go to.

I hope outlast 3 (if ever there will be outlast 3) will be the ultimate horror game experience. Where you are not allowed to play without headset with mic. Gameplay will be connected to the reaction of the player where if the player panics or scream the killer will find his or her location. Escape routs will be much harder because the killer will plant traps around it and falling into one will not make the killer catch you right away but he will stalk you and randomly jump at you without you noticing. Camera is also necessary both in the game and the one playing. The camera will monitor your fear. As fear rises the killer would likely ambush you out of nowhere. Being calm while playing horror game is next to impossible and will much be harder but also fun. It is like you are really the character in the game. If you make mistakes then you would not survive. Also the traps that I mentioned earlier would give you three chances to escape. At first you would only get bruises and exhausted the 2nd time will give you bleeding wont stop unless will not move for five seconds its either you move and dies in bleeding or move find a hiding spot and pray the killer will not find you and and if he doesnt you will be back to normal. The third and last chance will be quite brutal. It will snatch off the leg or an arm. After the third trap all traps will be disabled as it has reach the requirement of hindering your gameplay. I wish I could see this or close to this ideas on outlast 3 (if there will be)

Personally, I liked the first game more. I know the second one is newer, but I just like the setting at Mount Massive, and the instruments used in the first game's tracks.

Outlast 1 has understanding story and best horror gameplay and it is better for me outlast 2 is too hard and i got soo confused

OL1 fans expecting OL1 all over again in OL2 will be pretty disappointed. I think OL2 is still a fantastic game, just a very different one.

The FIRST Outlast is WAY, WAY, WAY better than the 2nd one!
Terror is much more RAW, while on Outlast 2 it is way softer.
Tension on both is good, but OUTLAST 1 still surpasses the 2nd in my opinion.

OVERALL, I prefer the 1st one in all departments, except, perhaps, in the graphical department for obvious evolution reasons.
