Often people think they are hearing violins, which I can't understand since they are pronounced with different stress points.

In actual fact its much worse than you describe. Nearly all Americans pronounce important as if it were spelled like this "impordant"

I've often heard people pronounce "important" as "impordant" and it ticks me off when they pronounce it that way
