Shutters no longer work and operate the way they were originally designed. Historically, shutters performed an important role in protection and safety as well as air condition and heat management. Today, shutters have become like faux stickers people put on their home for decoration. Brent discusses shutters historical sizing and purpose along with best ways to install shutters today. Good pointers especially regarding the proper placement of shutter dogs. Will be putting operational louvered shutters on an off-grid 100 year old Arkansas farmhouse. They will play a big role in passive cooling!

Brent good explanation, nice job. The sun and camera angle did not to the paint job any favors. I make shutters and every time I do black I am holding them outside in the sun, usually making myself crazy on the painting details.

Just bought a 124 year old home and first on the list is replacing the sticker shutters with wood operators. (and the old, currently aluminum capped wood sills with stone)

I would have bedded that pintle in caulk.

Also, I think the strap hinge is properly called a gudgeon. The gudgeon&pintle is the way a rudder hangs off a transom, but sailing borrowed that from homebuilding hundreds of years ago. (I will find a reference.)

We just bought a 40 year old Cape cod house and want to replace the rotten wood shutters. I want them to look functional but can't screw into the casing of our replacement windows that are not wood but vinyl. All of our local places only use vinyl shutters and I want wood raised panels. There are many online places to order but afraid to spend that kind of money and not receive the right size and not be able to return them.Also, who would I hire to install them? I need some guidance, please!!

How do I do functional shutters if the the wall space between my windows is narrower than the windows themselves? Just have the shutters overlap?? That seems aesthetically off putting.

How do you install shutters on a vinyl siding house where the windows dont have any window jamb/wood trim?

I did removed the shutters that were in my home but still have them. Don’t know if are original .They were nailed to the wall. I noticed that the hinges to hang shutters are still in place. I don’t know how to choose the correct style of shutter for my home or I should modified what was in place and hang them correctly.
