Carbon capture, utilisation, and storage solutions are part of the necessary portfolio enabling us reaching the climate targets. Finland has excellent opportunities to capture biogenic CO2 from the forest industry, other biorefineries and energy production facilities. Approximately 30 million tons of biogenic CO2 is generated annually from large point sources.

There are already plans for several carbon capture projects across the country. The significance of infrastructure is particularly highlighted in the projects where CO2 cannot be utilised or stored in the immediate proximity of the facility. In such cases, well-designed infrastructure is crucial for investment decisions and the development of the entire industrial ecosystem. CO2-infrastructure includes the necessary intermediate storage facilities inland and, on the coast, as well as the transportation via pipeline, rail, or trucks. Potential regional CO2-hubs could share common CO2-infrastructure, thereby enabling risk sharing, reducing costs for individual projects and the aggregation of sufficiently large CO2 volumes for transportation abroad for permanent storage or utilisation.

The Bioenergy Association of Finland has commissioned a study from VTT on the infrastructure and logistics required for carbon dioxide utilisation and storage pathways and the investment costs regarding the needed infrastructure solutions.
