Singapore Perspectives 2022: Pre-Conference | Mr George Yeo

At IPS’ Singapore Perspectives 2022: City, Mr George Yeo, Former Foreign Minister & Visiting Scholar at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, NUS, spoke at the pre-conference session on Cities, Civilisations and Geopolitics.

Aside from discussing the importance of connectivity and trust within cities, he also spoke on US-China relations.

You called Singapore a city-state... it cannot wholly be a nation. It can have connectivity but we have no land and no air space, though we may have a beautiful airport. We must
place a limit to the growth of our population for we are
already over populated.
We have no animals in forests and no birds in the sky, though we try our best to be green.
Do you think, in the very long run, it is better to become part of a nation again, if it is at all possible.?
We have no water of our own. 90% of our food are imported. We the citizens live everyday in stress. We all work five and a half day per week, and nine hours per day.. MANY OF US WORK SEVEN DAYS PER WEEK !
Singapore still have her own self-made problems after LKY was kicked out of
Malaysia. His son took over
from the father. Fortunately, the son is wiser than the father in that he is not that
authocratic and he has made Singapore a friend to all its neighbours, helping them whenever we are called upon to give help.
