Under Time-of-Use tariffs the price paid for electricity varies by the time of consumption. This can mean anything from consumer prices that are split into peak and off-peak times to prices that vary with the wholesale price. Either way ToU tariffs offer incentives to shift loads from peak hours to off-peak hours. This has become more attractive in recent years for two reasons, the ongoing electrification and technological advances. The ongoing electrification means that households have bigger and more flexible loads. Technological advances facilitate the required precise metering (smart meters) and make it more comfortable to shift loads (home energy management systems).
