Man I can’t wait to upgrade my 5601 c4… I want the worm drive bearings too though. I’ve had it for about 15 years now and it’s getting rough feeling. I think most of it is in the cog gear, it’s got some play in it. So I’m gonna order the upgraded cog gear with bearings too. How much did you give for those bearings?

is there any point in taking the cap and retaining plate off at all or can I just leave it on is there a purpose in taking that off

It's not a "thrust washer" it's a shim, thrust washers are only used on tapered roller bearings.
