Max and Caroline are family. The closest family that they ever had. Max had an absent mother and a father that was never in the picture. Caroline had a father that was not there for her as he was "busy". They both grew up by themselves and had to learn to navigate their lives.

Then they met and taught each other about real family, the ones that has your back, that sticks by you, that shares all your joy and sorrow, and most importantly, that loves you unequivocally.

So for them, whats mine is yours and whats yours is mine. That is how they view their relationship. Even without realisation or conciousness.
