By Kurt Weill and Bertold Brecht

A co-production with Cleveland Opera Theater

Directed by Scott Skiba
Conducted by Domenico Boyagian
Scenography by Matthew D. McCarren
Costume Design by Ester Haberlen

A transformative milestone of 20th century opera and music theater, "The Threepenny Opera" incorporates sharp political perspective and the sound of 1920s Berlin dance bands and cabaret.

Weill's acid harmonies and Brecht's biting texts created a revolutionary new style that inspired such subsequent hits as "Cabaret" and "Chicago." The opening number, "Mack the Knife," became one of the most popular songs of the 20th century.

Set in Victorian London, the opera focuses on Macheath, an amoral, antiheroic criminal. When he marries the daughter of the man who controls the beggars of London, the girl's parents devise a plan to have Macheath arrested and hanged.
