Ottawa CUPE protest to repeal Bill 128

Education workers gathered at picket lines across Ottawa Friday morning to express their dissatisfaction with the province forcing a contract on the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE).

cupe if they cared about the students would not be putting them through this crap...as a teacher i have been involved in other strikes and most of them instigated by the union to embarrass a conservative government... at no time did kids ever receive any consideration and they were the ones who lost out..educational unions have to be replaced so our kids can learn

I'm not sure what's going on with a lot of the comments. Folks. This has Nothing to do with teachers. This is about the people who do everything besides teach. The entire system runs on 100's of different jobs that arent given the time of day. Read for 2 mins before you jump to conclusions.

I'm Conservative but Doug has pulled a move to force a 4 year contract on CUPE. Unfortunately the teacher's union has consumed the public's patience and tax dollars so there is nothing left for support workers in the classroom.

I support CUPE. It's not just getting a kid in a classroom, it's about the custodians keeping the place clean, the EA's helping and assisting the children, the secretary buzzing in kids or helping with small cuts and bruises, ECE's, IT staff ETC. Those people make the environment and conditions safe for our children to learn.

I have a problem with a public sector union striking. Striking in the private sector is to apply pressure to the company. Striking in the public sector applies pressure to the citizens. The citizens who have nothing to do with it. This strike puts no pressure on the government. It's not like they'll suddenly have a reduction in tax revenue. They get those taxes regardless. Now parents have to deal with working while their kids are at home and potentially not taking part in school all the while still having to pay the taxes that fund the system these strikers are striking against. A 2.5% and 1.5% raise per year over the contract was reasonable. I get inflation is high but if we were in a deflationary period would any of you be advocating a pay decrease?
