Funny you mention the dissertation, I did my masters dissertation on that subject, it’s called the relative age effect and it does have a massive impact in pro football and academies, was the most interest Uni work I’d ever done !

The phanomenon Andy is talking about is called the „Matthew Effect". There is an incredible YouTube video about this by the creator memeable data called "How your birth month impacts your success". And to be a smarty pants … unless Britain groups their athletes in different age groups than the rest of Europe (totals plausible btw;)), it should be January giving you the highest chances to compete in the olympics.

Relative age effect has kind of been done to death in the research so I doubt anyone would do it for their final year project or thesis. It now more about tactics to get around it, like biobanding, moving where the cut off is, picking based on technique rather than general performance, more layers to development squads etc
