I will never understand why the Empty object is needed by default, but I don't need to understand - your video allowed me to achieve my intended effect: a simple bend deform on two perpendicular axes, creating a saddle-shape. Thank you.

After the final curve, how would I make the left bottom corner bend even more.

Thanks for this tutorial. I can«t understand though why you have to add a dummy object and rotate it 90 degrees (I know it doesn't work if you don't do it, but I cannot understand why).
