2. background study or Literature review to find what to do as research GAP to start with and
3. it should be a specific topic not as General/whole topic

I am an Engineering Ph.d holder....Most of the ideas that u said is applicable only to English Literature...In Engineering and Management, the topic has to be confirmed first by the Doctoral committee and guide... There is less possiblity to change the topic in between. Course work exams are based on the topic which we provide.
