Is the combo a bad idea when seen in the context of 4K gaming?

I'm still using my FX8350 with a GTX970. I'm not playing games in 4k, but I have no major issues at 1080. As an added bonus, my office at home is always warm thanks to the heat this CPU throws out. Love these old tech meets new tech videos!! Thanks!

It’s struggling to maintain 60 FPS nowadays in some games (albeit max settings) with the fastest consumer card right now. Dang...

I run an AMD 9590FX with a 1080TI founders. The old AMD 8 core holds strong on Every Game i throw at it - ultra settings with 1080p and almost full ultra on 1440p . I have held off for years on upgrading because i see no point as of now.

I just jumped from an FX-8350 to a Ryzen 5 3600X both running 16GB of RAM whilst paired with a GTX 970. And I must say that the FX still worked surprisingly well but now with Ryzen I can't recommend it unless you are already on the platform.

I was debating with so many people about the FX-9590 (all be it overpriced) with a Geforce 1080 at 4k/1440p and people said I couldn't.

Thank you for releasing the video. I'm so glad people can see I was correct about this matter!

I was doing something similar with my PC about a year ago. I was able to get a 1080 8gb one for cheap and paired it with an AMD FX 8350 and 16gb of ram. Everything was good for the most part until I upgraded to a Ryzen 5 2600 earlier this year and definitely saw the difference.

Ok, look. I'm a bit of an AMD fan boy, so of course I am biased. But as someone who once owned an FX-8350, you really should have overclocked the 8320E. The base clock of the 8320E is 3.2GHz. On my FX-8350 the base clock was 4.0GHz. Even still, overclocking my FX-8350 to 4.5GHz, plus overclocking the HT and NB to 2.6, and running at least 1866 DDR3 really did help the frame rates, and this overclock is what I got on air! Overclocking FX CPUs is pretty much a necessity if you are going to realistically use one for modern gaming. I paired mine with a Vega 56 and it performed fairly well once overclocked. Another cool thing about AM3+ is that there are actually motherboards that support NVMe drives (e.g. the Asus Sabertooth 990FX R2.0), though the PCIe 2.0 bottleneck is still there. And you also get ECC support! I ended up going for 32GB of ECC DDR3 at 1866 MHz along with my overclock (which was 24hr stable through stress tests). I eventually replaced my SATA SSD with an Optane PCIe SSD, and now my nephew uses it as a gaming PC.

Sick coincidence! I did exactly the same thing a few days ago. I had to wait for an new mobo so I took my watercooled 2080ti and paired it with the FX 8320.

Now over clock the hell out of that FX and run it again.

This was just for science and I loved it!

FX is at it's best overclocked. That FX 8320E is lacking about 50% in CB score i'd expect from FX 83## system properly setup. You can get to around 800CB on a FX system.
That is still more than good enough for 1080p gaming.

Just working on building 1x FX-8350 and 2x FX 9590 systems :) FX systems sell like hot pancakes around here, and for more money than equivalent ryzen systems oO;

Who needs frame time graphic? Let’s just watch on the FPS counter. Great YouTube channel 👍

Since you got such a fine FX system and those interesting numbers, maybe you could also test properly overclocked FX system? NB speed to 2600, memory as fast as possible, CPU at around 4.2-4.5, you know the drill.

Rocking my RX 580 and an FX 8350 and in getting 50-60fps on a mix of medium-high-ultra settings in Red Dead Redemption 2 at ultrawide resolution!
