After many years of just still photography I just started doing video a few years ago. I use my Sony A77 mk I (previously an A55) for both stills and video. My videos tend to be from group adventure travel, mostly trekking, so most of the time the video and stills have to be done fast with once chance to get the shot before the 'foreground interest' have vanished off down the track leaving me behind!

I did discover when I got the A77 that I can set the shutter and aperture for video - something that had never occurred to me before even though I do it for stills. But for some reason this is only available with focus set to manual which I decided was impractical when in a rush. I did pick up using the exposure lock button to keep brightness constant as I pan across differently illuminated landscape. To avoid the focus changing when I go past something closer in the foreground I have been focusing on the distance then using the AF/MF switch on the lens to freeze the focus. Then every other day I take the next several stills with the focus still turned off until I notice 'why isn't this in focus'.

As a result of watching this video I looked at the controls again and rediscovered that there is also an AF/MF button on the back of the camera next to the exposure lock. This can be changed between holding it down to use it and toggle mode, and brilliantly is cancelled after the shot so If I change to using that I can't forget to turn autofocus back on for the stills! Not only that, but it then allows the shutter/aperture settings for video so I may give that a try after all.

I did figure out about a year ago that the auto white balance was causing the annoying step changes in tone, so recently I have just been shooting with the white balance left constantly on the generic "daylight" setting. I don't take time choosing it for each shot but at least sequential shots come out consistent.

You are right about the importance of getting video right in camera because it isn't RAW so is hard to correct. There is a related issue for me because I combine a lot of my landscape and detail still photos into the video. I tweak the stills to be as perfect as possible in lightroom, then end up having to strip off half of the corrections again to try to make them match video. The biggest frustration is having to make the stills less sharp to match the fuzziness of video. Maybe using a higher shutter speed for the video would help now I have a new way to try that. Or maybe I need to get a camera that will shoot 4K to match the resolution of the stills.

Thanks for such a useful and inspiring video, and yes I would definitely be interested to see more videos on video.

I actually was planning on taking a month off of work and doing a solo landscape photography adventure in NW USA so I thought the 30-day course would be perfect .... but I'm in a contract for work until end of Feb!

I am actually trying to make the jump from photo to video as well, so def make more videos like this.

Hello Pierre! Thanks for posting this video on videography. It actually helped me understand how to record video on my canon 80d, which I only use it for pictures. And yes I would appreciate more videos on videography. Thanks again! I look forward to future videos from you! 😃

Super interesting, videos about film making from a photographer standpoint sound great to me, I think you should continue on this topic. I'm thinking about starting video since a very long time, but I've never shot so much just a little with a go pro while travelling but I'm not happy with the ending, I didn't know anything about it. Looking forward to the next adventures to apply all these great tips, thanks man!

All of it really makes sense, I do video for my YouTube which I was inspired by you to start it. I use a canon 6D Mark ii, a gopro hero 7 and my Samsung Galaxy S9+. I use them all. Great tips Pierre

Literally JUST got back from shooting my first video (the footage) & I'll admit, I made a couple of these mistakes, I tried to correct while I was in the field, but was on a time limit 😅! For the type of photography/hiking I do, I'm using a gopro Hero7, I shoot some clips w/my D810 (IF I remember, today I didn't 🤦🏻‍♀️).

Awesome video! & *YES* to more about video making! 🤙🏽

Great tips. Thank you so much. Please make more videos like this. It took me a long time to pick up the tips you mentioned. Recently, I've started to shoot video with Cine-Log enabled on my LG V30+ and eventually S-logs2 on my A7ii. At the same time, I'm learning how to use Davinci Resolve 15. I haven't used the 2x shutter speed rule much. I shoot 60fps when I want to slow down the footage, but normally 30fps seems fine for me.

I've just got the A7iii for Christmas and am getting into the video side of it. It's so much fun!!! I have pretty much no clue what I'm doing but the journey is amazing. Any tips from you are more than welcome. I'd especially know which profile settings you use and what all the different ones mean.

Great energy Pierre as always and keep up the good work. I shoot mostly video on a Panasonic G80 (I remember your early videos with this camera!!!). I pretty much shoot in manual mode with back button focus enabled whenever I need to grab focus. This lets me not have to rely on the continuous AF on the Panasonic as it is a little slow on the G80. Completely agree on your point with setting everything to manual and you’re right that composition is key in both photography and videography.

Gonna start shooting video this week! Plan on using either my Sony A6000, the A7II or the Nikon D850, not sure yet. It would be great if you did a video on what your settings are, almost like a tutorial on setting up your camera for film.

I do video (beginner), but my Davinci software stopped working after the last update. :( Have Vegas Pro, but oh boy, it really is a pain to use.
That really made me switch back to photography totally, for now at least.
But, yes, being a photography definitely gives you and advantage when it comes to videography.
Also, once again, another great Video Pierre. Thank you!
