The way me and my peeps do this, is we do the same begining part, but instead we to the amount of letters leftover, until only one FLAME letter is left. Then that was how you and your friend would be in the future. And it has worked for me.

The way that I played was you would count again and again until only one letter remained and that one letter was the one you did ( that’s just another way you could do it)

No, this isn't how it is played. Back in the days (almost 3 decades back) we used to strike the letters in FLAMES one after the other counting the total remaining letters of our names.

Like in the given example, 7 letters (the remainder from your and your crush' names) were counted in FLAMES and the 7th letter that happens to be F was striked down. Likewise starting from L, 7 letters were counted again and striked down. Finally after repeating the process the last letter you were left with in FLAMES was the relationship you were meant to share with them.
