Luxury products should only be marketed to adults that are financially stable and emotionally cognizant enough to understand their purchases. Getting teen idols to be your ambassadors is such a predatory tactic to target their majority middle-class teenage fanbase. It also just feels icky to see teens wear these old-money luxury brands because it’s not actually formed by their own sense of individual style…

I didn’t really take too much consideration into this topic until I noticed NewJeans getting these deals early and it felt so not on brand with some of the deals they got and heavily forced by ador who kept posting about it before the brands did and were misinforming about their positions with the brands who had to then clarify their standing…it was kinda embarrassing tbh but no one called this out too much until NewJeans mostly blew up.

Thank God. I always found it creepy how those companies use literal kids to promote those brands... Not only because it's a bad influence to other kids but also because it's pretty much child exploitation

This is insanity. This is why financial literacy should be taught in high school curriculum. If these kids wanna support their idols they better pay it with their own money. I remember having to work for a whole summer in my teen years just so I could buy 1 concert ticket for an intl artist.

This is not an idol problem. This is a South Korea problem. Even outside of kpop, their society struggles with hyper-capitalistic tendencies, even more so than the US. In South Korea you must: Act perfect, be perfect, look perfect, wear the hottest brands, own the biggest house, score the highest on exams, have the biggest salary or most successful company. Don't have these things? Well, be prepared to have THE ENTIRE SOCIETY look down on you. Have every parent say "no" to you marrying their son or daughter, have every company turn you down, have your own family members ashamed of you, have every university reject you. In short: Be ready to live a life of absolute misery. This is why SK has one of the highest suicide rates on the planet. The competition and societal pressure is too goddamn much!

Interesting note about Randoseru bags; They're Japanese in origin and in japan are not treated like luxury items and more as a common backpack for elementary school kids. They're usually made of real leather an very sturdily made. Buying one is seen as a rite of passage for a kindergartener. Also of note is even though they still are fairly expensive around $300, they're meant to be used for the ENTIRE time a kid is in elementary school from K-5 which is why they're made to last. It's not like in the west where kids get a new backpack at the beginning of every school year.

Luxury brands used to choose idols who really embodies their brands. When you see the likes of GD, Kai, IU, Sehun, Hwasa, and the BP girls, they can be ambassadors for years because they represent the brand so perfectly. That’s only possible because they have already established their own identity in the industry. Now it’s more of a power play on who can be the next IT GIRL of the next generation. The outcome then is, teens looking matronly in clothes that overpower them. It also adds another layer of pressure to these young idols who shouldn’t even be debuting as young as they are.

Thank you for making this video. As I watched it I realize how I am slowly falling down a bad rabbit whole when it comes to spending money on albums (even if I don't like the album) just to support the artist. From now on I'll start only buying albums once I've listened to it and only if I like it. Your videos are always really well made, thank you for helping me stay up to date with K-pop stuff going on!

I don't care when kpop idols become brand ambassadors. Korea already has problem with consumerism and "keeping up with the joneses". Parents continue to find issues in pop culture to blame on for their fail parenting skills

The issue is SK puts "social standing" on way too high of a pedestal, and people experience this from birth till death. That's why so many end themselves due to the pressure. In most countries, that type of mindset doesn't go past high school except in certain little bougie pockets. SK is different. You have to be high fashion, look perfect, act perfect, and be perfect. It's insane.

A few weeks ago I remember YouTubers and fans complaining about JYPE & them not ‘allowing’ their idols to be ambassadors. Guess this is a smart choice. Morals over quick cash

That jacket-tiering and North Face epidemic moment reminded me once again about how unhinged consumerism is in Korea, even more than the US, even when it comes to things outside Kpop. It’s sometimes unbelievable how the society in almost its entirety conceded to this hyper-capitalistic system. The fact that some expensive branded jackets became almost like another item of school uniforms is just… sad honestly. Of course, there’s the irony of how I’m saying this as a kpop stan engulfed in the consumer items this industry provides, our idols.

Imagine how the world would shift if parents learned to say "no" and teach their kids that life isn't about material goods.... Oh wait that'd be asking them to actually parent their children, nevermind, my bad.

i think only adult idols should be able to promote luxury brands cause their full grown adults with older fans so it makes sense

Ok so parents are blaming idols because they refuse to take responsibility for buying their kids this crap? I'm sorry but no. I am a parent and my daughter wouldn't dare to demand these kinds of things from me. People need to learn to tell their kids no

Never cared about how expensive someone’s clothes are, never will 😅

I think idols that are adults should not be considered the same as teen idols.

Preventing adults from having certain contracts will honestly hurt smaller companies who rely on brand deals financially.

I'm from India and I feel glad that our school system strictly prohibits any kind of clothing article other than school uniforms like sometimes not even fancy hairclips or rings and stuff, the main motto being to establish that all students are equal inside the school campus and it helps the situation of discrimination against one based on clothing brands etc. although sometimes we would get shamed for wearing a skirt shorter than knee length or hair not in a formal updo or sometimes ever wearing a tinted lip balm. And one more thing I'm really proud to say is that the bullying situation in India is wayyyy better than in America, Korea or Japan. Till the early 2010s, there were very rare cases of bullying, can't say the same for today's kids as the internet and awareness of society's standards have stolen a lot of innocence from them.

I’m so glad you are talking about concerns within the kpop industry. I believe the moment that I saw NewJeans being brand ambassadors was quite scary, they are very young people. I really hope that this really gets under control. Not to be harsh but this is just ridiculous

Its kinda ironic how they draw the line at thier kids with fashion brands but will continue to let thier minor kids have plastic surgery 😊
