Древняя потеха, увеселение. Уже во времена Гомера был популярен в Древней Греции. С 688 до н. э. Кулачный бой был включён в программу Олимпийских игр. Существует на Руси с глубокой древности. Бои проводились обычно с Масленицы до Троицы, реже с Коляды до Петрова дня.
