This slow version is the best... very soulful. Love Neil Sedaka..

This version is much better than the older. This makes a standard of the tune. co-written by Sedaka and Howard Greenfield

He may be one of the few artists to have big hits with two very different versions of the same song.

I liked Neil Sedaka during the 60s when in high school. I heard this version back around '75-'76 while I was laid up with a broken leg in hospital and managed to record it off the radio on my cassette player.... It was a delightful musical surprise to hear. The biggest surprise, though, was years earlier, sometime in the later 60s I was was watching some TV show with my folks; we knew Neil was going to be on the show, but when he came on-stage he sat at the piano and started playing Chopin. He would've no doubt been a great concert pianist had he gone down that musical road.
Just a few days ago, on facebook, I saw a video Neil very recently made at home, singing a medley of his early hits; something to entertain his fans with while they're in isolation because of the corona virus. I loved it - an 80 year old musical veteran entertaining his old fans from home .... too good.

It's early '76: my grandfather James Burl Roberson Sr, sang it, word by word; for he knew that our family was moving out soon! It also reminds me of the Johnson sisters: either Dawn or Earline-1 of them mocked me at the laundromat one afternoon; I lashed back at her until she cried! Unfortunately, every morning in my dreams, this song played; and she'd cry 😭 so hard 'til the tears overflowed her eyeglasses! As Neil sang "Breakin' Up...Is So Very...", I woke up & told mama about it! She knew I liked Earline or Dawn; I denied, but eventually, I apologized for that bad incident! She & I were friends until around Summer of '78-I saw her no more from that day and time!!

You tell me that you're leavin'
I can't believe it's true
Girl there's just no livin' without you
Don't take your love away from me
Don't you leave my heart in misery
'Cause if you go, then I'll be blue
Breakin' up is hard to do

Remember when ya held me tight
And ya kissed me all through the night
Think of all that we've been through
And breakin' up is hard to do

They say that breakin' up is hard to do
Now I know, I know that it's true
Don't say that this is the end
Instead of breakin' up
I wish that we were makin' up again
I beg of you, don't say goodbye
Can't we give our love just one more try
Come on baby, let's start anew
Breakin' up is hard to do
Breakin' up is oh, so hard to do

In the 70's, before YouTube or the Internet, I called my local radio station, KLIV, and spoke to the DJ. I asked him to please, please find the slow version of this song to play it for my long-time companion. We were breaking up that night, and even though I wanted it, it was still SO HARD!!! He found it and played it.

This is the version of this song from Neil Sedaka that I remember the most as it came out in 1976 when I was a kid. The other one from Neil Sedaka came out in 1962, which was before I was even born. In any event, both versions of this song sound so good. However, this one holds the most memories for me, because it's the one I heard on the radio all the time as a kid. I give it a thumbs-up. :-)

This should become an addition to the Great American Songbook.

I believe that Neil Sedaka still holds the distinction of being the only artist to cover one his own #1 hit and take that cover to #1 as well.

A beautiful rendition. It is the only song in history to have two different versions, the fast, bubblegum version in 1962, and this beautiful, slow version in 1975, by the same artist both go to #1 on the charts.

I love this version. It is more melancholy, as it should be. This is the version they used for the movie of the same name.
