You Got The Silver | Fly Fishing for Tarpon

A short film highlighting the yearly buddy trip down to the Florida Keys during the second week of May '21. The fishing was definitely tougher than years past but that didn't mean there was a lack of fish. Despite the fish being tricky, it doesn't get much better than trading shots with your best buddies on a skiff. We look forward to these couple of days every year. The only thing I regret is that we couldn't fish out of our new Chittum Mangrove and had to use our buddy's Waterman instead.

The one thing you boys are doing (not Andy of course since he's ole school) that so many people tend to do as well, is not pointing your rod tip towards the fly instead of out to the side, as well as you are holding it up with lots of slack in the line, instead of putting the rod tip at the water. All this causes slack and gives them time to make a head shake to toss it back out as soon as it feels any tension. So you don't get the exact feel the instant they suck it up, nor could get an instant hook set with a straight stick approach. So you miss a lot of solid hook sets immediately and the few seconds they have to run before you can react, gives them all the time they need to make a few more head shakes and toss the fly back at you.

Up the Gulf coast where we don't get as many fish as you do down there, every eat counts. So you have to make every move purposely to get that solid stick! Rod tip touching the surface and pointing directly at the fly, mend any slack and bow in the line, so you can the bump and then straight stick them at that moment without the rod in play, to get that instant hook set. Just test me on that and do it the next time you're at them and I promise you that your hookup ratio will go through the roof. ;)

Outstanding! Tarpon fly fishing the way it really is. It’s not always pretty, but it’s always a hoot. Nice to see someone else post a video of the occasional screw ups . The music was perfect. I’ll watch this one a few more times 👍👍

I’m considering getting me a fly rod setup. I’m on the gulf coast and these fish are super finicky by the time they get up here. What weight rod and stuff were you using in this video?
