The two-hundred and forty-third episode of Sunday Funday, hoisted by Benjamin.

Episode #243 finds us continuing the journey to explore the upper limits of performance, following the studio upgrade to a brand new Apple M1 Mac Mini. Today, we are seeing if the new machine is up to the task for recording through plugins from Waves and Plugin Alliance, some of which are not yet natively supported on Apple’s M1 processors as of recording in early January 2022. This is not an argument against using DSP, this is simply asking the question for my particular use case, this is what I imagined I would need to use DSP for, recording vocal overdubs with imperceivable latency during an already busy session in the middle of a mix. Is the new machine up to the challenge? Do you need DSP to record through plugins in an M1 Mac Mini? Watch to find out! This show aims to uncover the magic and demystify recording, Native Instruments REAKTOR, GUITAR RIG, KONTAKT, MASCHINE, PRO TOOLS, SOUNDTOYS, WAVES, and music production in general.

Could u compare the latency between the dry signal and the processed one? In ableton, when monitoring is off, there is zero latency.. when monitoring is on, buffer size latency applies

Marvelous! Thanks so much! This is exactly what I was looking for. And since you’re continuing doing such test videos, I have small suggestions maybe you like them. (1) open the system usage window to show CPU and memory utilization during the test. (2) Try to track in 32 samples, even if we think it won’t work but just for fun and and experimentation. Thanks again. BTW, which audio interface you’re currently using?

Thank you for demonstration ! Helps a lot to get a decision towards audio gear :) !

Would it still work this well if you were recording say, a whole drum set with plugins on each track?

This is killer. I need a upgrade to my audio interface and wanted to see what Apogee Symphony or Apollo Twin X could do for me, but I think its overkill and expensive. My plan B (now A) was to look at the Mac Studio setup and rely on M1 to be that muscle - so I can track w/ Autotune and cover up my real vox ;-). Subscribed and watching for updates - nice work!
