In this video I take a look at surfing in the Olympics in 2021 - who qualified? How did they qualify? And why the heck didn't they use the damn wave pool?

I hope eventually they have many surfing events. Shortboard, longboard, wave pool, the more the better :D

What about a video of you summarizing the surfing Olympics in general, and their results? Would be interesting to hear.

I think it would be cool for the IOC to include another medal event in surfing artificial waves, then we could really see some amazing skills and it would be much more skill based. Keeping the tradition is still important though. And adding vert to skating too.

Olympic surfing need to include more surfers. Every country wishing to field a team should be allowed to do so as in other olympic sports. Olympic surfing needs to be in the ocean and in the wave pool as 2 seperate events as they are very different. It was sad that many great surfers were not able to compete because of the limited number of spots open and how they were chosen. I will use South Africa as my example Both Jordy Smith & Matthew McGillivray should have been able to be on their olympic team. I am happy for all of the winners but there needs to be much improvement before the Olympics in France.

Leonardo fioravanti ended up dumping his leg rope into Japanese waters in his heat... Thought that was pretty average. Owen Wright killed it. Julian was surfing pretty well but got knocked out early. Italo was the form surfer in the end, but Konoa really struggled to find a decent wave in the final. Konoa seemed to stubbornly be going for that same right hander with no scoring maneuvers. Also, the medina bs 360 and konoa fs360 w/ grab was contentiously scored.

Surfing in the olympics was always going to bring popularity to the sport..Though bringing more into the sport is great for skateboarding and any other sport, it makes surfing more difficult for those of us who have surfed for a long time due to overcrowded lineups. "Surf schools" are springing up everywhere spoiling once quiet locations, wetsuit gear is out of stock and people are asking ridiculous prices for second hand boards.. Gone are the days when people look at me strange and say "what..you surf..we get waves here ?"..well people still look at me strange...)

It's great seeing surfing as an Olympic sports. Still seems like there's a lot more fine tuning that can be done though. I think surfing can still evolve and grow as a sport. The event over all seemed a bit too short and putting it all in one day, sort of like luck, just because of weather condition, made it a bit one sided.

Hi kale. Could you teach us how to do snaps on a thicker board. I just got a new board and its a bit thicker than what im used to (its because im growing a lot recently) and I want to know how to go off the lip and do snaps like I used to, I can still do carves on it but i cant do any bigger turns on it, the waves have been pretty small in puerto rico latley. I just want to figure out how to start doing big turns again.

Wouldn't it be an advantage for countries with large contingents? Your best 2 out of 1000 applicants should have a higher level than your best 2 out of 100?

Why’d you stop the news report after she said surfing?

What's BS is they lined up Andino and Florence in the RD3 heat, eliminating a medal contender prior to the quarters. Why wasn't Italo and Gabe lined up prior to the quarters?? No other heat bracket had two from the same country. The biased BS of the committee on full display.

As an olympic sport...Keep it in a wave pool. Controlled environment. Spectator friendly. regulations on equipment and maneuvers. frontside waves vs frontside waves, backside waves vs backside waves....
refine surfing, quick progression rate with the drawback of extreme monotomy.

As an artform or escapist activity. Give surfing a bad name. Limit the industry to boards and wetsuits... and expect a higher wave count..

... Keep it middle ground for kales broccoli. Nobody ever gave insight on how to surf in the past like you do. You had to watch others and figure it out yourself... till surf vcr videos came out.

Your killing it. Your surfing's gotten better and we get to live vicariously through you... those of us who can't surf all the time or have been relagated to areas extremely weak waves. If there's a rideable wave surf it, no matter where itis.

I agree, surfing natures waves as an olympic sport is ridiculos for the out of "ethos" reason you discussed here. Sally surfed the shit out of every wave she caught in pretty horrible conditions and gets eliminated and owen was completely outsurfed by medina who failed to land 3 ariels while owen surfed safe cutbacks to bronze, so stupid. Im sure it will remain a force in the olympics but it does need to be in a controled consistent wave environment.Yeah a lot of people might say like you said that positioning is part of surfing but there is too much luck involved in the sport, its the olymics. "ok jess fox youll have your k1 heat tomorrow at 8am but we arent sure if the water level will be the same as todays competitors and there may or may not be any water in the kayak pool at all and starc, your highjump bar will move at random, there may not even be a bar for you to jump, just do your best"

I reckon they should have both ocean AND pool tournaments in the olympics, just exactly like they have park & street in the skateboarding, this would allow for 4 surfers from each country the chance to compete in the olympics
