Lack of accountability and the ability to make exorbitant profits off of the misfortune of others is unconscionable. Simply completing the bare minimum in preparations isn’t enough after a major catastrophe, especially when it was caused by gross negligence. A strict liability standard needs to be imposed on the energy companies now that they are hyper aware of problems that exist.

As an example, if any individual person performed this way, say as a manager of a team in a for profit company, they would be held accountable and disciplined accordingly. In this particular situation, the free market can’t protect us from the terrible service ERCOT provided. Consequently, they must be held to extremely high standards and be regulated to perform at those standards or be held liable monetarily (which they cannot then pass to consumers).
