After using R for race, you can use 1 for first place.

All good advice really. It's a shame people aren't required to pass their driving tests with a manual car, that requires you to think so much more about your driving than a slushbox.

As a European, this is like telling someone how to walk

I learned manual in the 7th grade and have been driving it so long to the point that i look for the clutch on an automatic or CVT car

when you're braking in a manual car, especially from speed, you release the accelerator and press the brake to slow down. you leave the clutch alone and the slowing engine actually facilitates slowing the car because the wheels are under control and deceleration is improved. you put thr clutch in shortly before stopping

For my AE Corolla I always put the lever on 3rd or 4th. Main reason is being rwd there are two shifter return springs and by putting it on 1 or reverse you compress those springs and wear the tension over time. This is why you sometimes feel going from neutral to first has less resistance then going from neutral to reverse and vise versa. It's okay for most fwd as the shifter return springs are torsion springs and not heliacal

Another good way to avoid shifting into the wrong gear is to realize that most modern cars will have 5 or 6 gears and a reverse gear, so you separate the gear stick into three columns one to the left, one in the center and one in the right. When you have the stick in neutral and you're not touching it, it will automatically be in the 3 and 4 column, so you know from there if you shift downwards you'll have fourth, and upwards you'll have three. Same for the left and right column. This way, just by letting the stick naturally fall into position, or moving it left or right you know which column you are in, and which gears you can select.

additional information from Eastern Europe. never use the handbrake because it doesn't work. always brake with the clutch on the hill because the handbrake doesn't work. don't park on a hill because the handbrake doesn't work. when you have to park on a hill, use a large stone or a piece of wood that you find somewhere in the garbage near the place where you park. the first gear is a little difficult, so add gas and go from the second. the clutch only works all the way down. don't destroy the clutch, we don't have it in stock and we can't buy a new one. that clutch was good for your grandfather, but today's young generation...

I've once happened to be slowing down in a parking lot using engine. And my car is fwd. And it was winter. And I was turning...
Breaking power of the engine ended up being the main culprit of locking the wheels and making me slip. Luckily I wasn't going fast to begin with and a slight touch on the accelerator immediately solved the issue.
Be careful out there

That two-finger shift displayed in the video is actually performed on a Scania Comfortshift transmission. It's a preselect computerised gearchange. Hence the shifter has no actual direct link to the gearbox. The driver selects the desired gear, and that gear is only engaged when the clutch is depressed.

dumping the clutch without revs behind it CAN stall you out, but you can save it by giving it some gas or pushing the clutch back in

Thanks Dad for teaching me all of things.
When I was 10.
Always park with the E-Brake/Parking brake on? NO! I live in an Arctic environment and this is a strict no-no below -25C. Especially after driving through snow there is a strong possibility you will 'freeze' the brake in place. Buy a set of chocks if you live in this type of environment and leave the lever down.
I also lived in Vancouver BC which is notorious for being mountainous, wet, and having some of the worst drivers in North America. Driving a RWD Celica (1985 model), with no weight, bad tyres, and on a steep incline with a complete Douche parked right up my @#% teaches you how to do the e-brake launch really fast. I also learned to do a 'roll back' at red lights to warn people behind me a was driving a stick.

Never shift gears too fast, let the stick rest in the middle for a split second each time to allow synchronizers to work.

Yeah, I'm doing some of these... Using the Clutch while uphill, sometimes resting my foot on the clutch and resting my hand on the gear shifter... That, I do a lot.

Someone once told me, the best manual transmission driver makes you feel you were in an auto transmission.

i have few things to say and add.
honestly when shifting its better to use the palm of your hand or ball of your thumb. this makes shifting into gear smoother for newer drivers but also its also good to remember to take your time your not in a race.

also i feel its very important to say but the car tells you a lot about when needing to change gear. if the car is screaming and your doing 30 in second probably best to go up a gear or two however if your on an incline its always best to go faster than you normally would before changing to account for the loss in speed dipping the clutch would give.

I drive a 2012 Toyota Tacoma with miles. It still has the original clutch. I live in the LA area and hold the clutch at each stop. If you have to move quickly you don't have to wait while you put the car in gear
