Broke, brave, and brash, Richard Davis shot himself 192 times. Why? To invent the modern-day bulletproof vest and launch a multimillion-dollar company. He was a hero to police and the military, until tragedy brought him down. His is an American story of guns, violence, lies, and self-deception.

I knew Richard Davis well and was the first officer on my department to purchase one of his vests in 1976 and wear it on duty at a time when it was deemed "unprofessional" by management for a uniform officer to do so.

In spite of the later problems with Zylon fabric the long and the short of it is over 1.000+ police officers in the USA are alive today because they were wearing one of Richard's vests when they were shot-stabbed- or suffered blunt injuries due to motor vehicle collisions.

The man deserves your Congressional Medal of Freedom.

This looks excellent. I used to be really into guns. I used to hang out with a crows that was really into guns. I remember the ads in the magazines showing the guy shooting himself. I remember the articles and books by Massad Ayoob, gun glorifier extraordinaire. And the other guys, Elmer Keith, the "Hell I Was There!" article guy, a bunch of others. Before the internet, glossy magazines were where it was at, and guns were far more affordable than cars or even guitars. Guns were something a guy on a budget could get into. You could even feel like you were "scientific", getting into bullet weights and shapes and powder loads.

In a way this will almost make me nostalgic for my young adulthood. I think this will prove to be a valuable film, as it will show the essential craziness. The glorification of violence. I'm nearing retirement age now and think of a gun as no more romantic than a screwdriver. But a lot of guys went the other way, as January 6th showed us.

I feel it's a bit biased for roger ebert to give his own biopic a good review.

I first become familiar with Richard Davis and Second Chance by watching the instructional video "Deadly Weapons" back around 1990.I really enjoyed 2nd Chance, by watching it, I'm reminded that the past is a foriegn country.I find Richard's history and life to be very interesting.I felt like a 'Red Blooded American' with alot of nostalgia for my coming of age watching 2nd Chance.

One of the best documentaries I watched.
What the director inadvertently did too is about the military industrial (political) complex too.
As Davis got filthy rich selling to the military.
And later he sold 100.000 of defective vests from a supposedly better material.
Very interesting how the history unfolds, and how in USA, a redneck can do a fortune for themselves.
You have to watch it.

Best wishes.

I'll have to watch this. I have seen many soldiers saved by body armor in Iraq, but almost exclusively by the ceramic plates, not the Kevlar vest that held them.
