This is a fascinating talk on mining, pollution, and climate change by Dr. Margrit von Braun who is an environmental engineer and scientist. Margrit von Braun is an environmental engineer, working in the areas of hazardous waste management and risk assessment. She holds degrees from the Georgia Institute of Technology, University of Idaho, and Washington State University. After working for USEPA in Atlanta, Margrit moved to Idaho in 1977 to work for the Idaho DEQ. She joined the faculty at UI in 1980; she helped found and directed the Environmental Science and Environmental Engineering programs for 10 years and then served as dean of the College of Graduate Studies for 10 years.
In 1984, she and her husband, Ian von Lindern, founded an environmental engineering company focused on remediation of hazardous waste sites, particularly in mining districts. Since retiring from UI and selling their company, Margrit and Ian founded TerraGraphics International Foundation (TIFO), a non-governmental organization assisting communities in reducing their environmental exposures.
This is a talk on her past work with TIFO in Nigeria and how #mining for metals exacerbates #inequality which the #GreenNewDeal attempts to solve. Mining for metals required by solar panels can potentially be devastating to these communities if the labor is outsourced.

As heartbreaking as some of these issues were, I appreciate how Doctors Without Borders, TIFO (led by Dr. Margrit Von Braun and including 400 hired members of the community) along with the Nigerian government put in the painstaking effort to address and reverse the familial contamination of lead poisoning brought on by gold mining. The bit regarding light pollution was also eye-opening.
