Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramhansa Yogananda. Steve Jobs used to read it every year and "gave" a copy, posthumously, to all his friends at his funeral. By the way, the same author wrote a massive commentary on the Bhagavad Gita, two thick volumes, not for everybody, but certainly for people willing to know. See you tomorrow at your three days seminar online, thank you.

5:41 Phill is talking about

yoga-sthah—steadfast in yoga;
kuru—perform;
karmani—your duty

this is a sanskrit sholkh and this is the first line of it. Full shlokh is
"yoga-sthah kuru karmani
sangam tyaktva dhananjaya
siddhy-asiddhyoh samo bhutva
samatvam yoga ucyate"

Meaning below:
Be steadfast in yoga, O Arjuna (name of the warrior). Perform your duty and abandon all attachment to success or failure. Such evenness of mind is called yoga.

basic meaning:
don't worry about the result, do the correct deed and take action.

I'm a current rule one student and have listened to every podcast--many of them twice--so excited to read the new book. Just pre-ordered it. I actually bought your first book as an Amazon Deal of the Day. That led me to the next book...and then the podcast... and then the workshop...and now the class. Best two bucks I ever spent. God Bless!

- 48 Laws of Power - Robert Greene

Hi Phil, those are some great recommendations. One of my favorite books of all times is The Richest Man In Babylon. It's a timeless classic.

I was pleasantly surprised to see we have the same top three. I read constantly and voraciously, but I rarely read a book several times. Atlas Shrugged and The Success Principles have been an exception.
Same for these two books:

The War of Art by Steven Pressfield Aimed not just at artists; this is for entrepreneurs, anyone starting a venture, the person stuck where they are in personal growth, and, yes, artists who need a smart and humorous book to get them over that hump. Sometimes the bump in the road is actually quite small, but it may as well go on for a hundred miles. Pressfield pulls no punches while telling you to ditch the excuses, get up, get off your butt, and get moving! It's an easy, quick read, but so worth the time.

Be Our Guest by The Disney Institute Yes, I know, it's a book about Disneyland. But the pages are filled with common sense behaviors and insights as to how you TREAT PEOPLE. This seems, in today's world, to be a forgotten art. Let's face it, no matter where you are in life, if you are going to grow personally, spiritually, emotionally, financially, then you deal with other people.
I just love this book for reminding us that how we want to be treated, is how everyone else wants to be treated. Knowing that, it's always in our power to give everyone we interact with; family, friends, co-workers, employees, clients, and don't forget perfect strangers (because you don't know what role they will play in your life); ALWAYS GO THE EXTRA MILE. Be the person who makes people smile, when you are in direct contact, and later when they hear your name or think of you.

Great short list, Phil. As always, I enjoy your ideas.

The "The Richest Man in Babylon" definitely needs to be on this list.

Stealing Fire - Steven Kotler & Jamie Wheal - Perfect example of not judging a book by it’s cover. Fascinating read

The celestine prophecy - James Redfield - Read this in one sitting; mind changing

The power of now - Eckhart Tolle - Life changing

Principles - Ray Dalio - currently reading; simply can’t put it down

Recommend adding:
* The classic audio presentation: 'The Strangest Secret in the World' by Earl Nightingale (use the internet search engine of your choice, about 32 minutes; also available in print);
* "The Richest Man In Babylon" by George S. Clason (written in 1926 and still available in print);
* Everything by Jim Rohn, suggest starting with "The 5 Major Pieces To The Life Puzzle" then his "7 Strategies For Wealth and Happiness", followed by his other print & audio/visual items (e.g. 'The Art of Exceptional Living' & 'The Weekend Seminar', etc.);
* Everything by Og Mandino, if you only read 1 of his books suggest "A Better Way to Live", however if you read his other books first and save A Better Way for last it will have (far) more meaning.
Carpe Diem!

Phil, I'm deep into your book "Rule #1". Love it... Great Stuff! I would recommend people also read Jason Greenblatt's books, like "The Little Book that beats the market".

NO LITTLE PEOPLE by Francis Schaeffer WEIGHT OF GLORY by CS Lewis

“We are always falling in love or quarreling, looking for jobs or fearing to lose them, getting ill and recovering, following public affairs. If we let ourselves, we shall always be waiting for some distraction or other to end before we can really get down to our work. The only people who achieve much are those who want knowledge so badly that they seek it while the conditions are still unfavorable. Favorable conditions never come.”

“I have received no assurance that anything we can do will eradicate suffering. I think the best results are obtained by people who work quietly away at limited objectives, such as the abolition of the slave trade, or prison reform, or factory acts, or tuberculosis, not by those who think they can achieve universal justice, or health, or peace. I think the art of life consists in tackling each immediate evil as well as we can.”

― C.S. Lewis, The Weight of Glory

The Art of War.. the leadership principles alone were enough for me in 11th grade to look at coaches in one sport of our school and realize why their teams were outperforming sports coached by other people who could have learned a thing from Sun Tzu.

This a very good list, Phil! I’ve read all but the Bhagavad Vita and JJ Virgin’s book. (Just finishing Success Principles.). I think you’d enjoy a book called “Ship of Gold in the Deep Blue Sea” by Gary Kinder - it’s by far my favorite non-fiction read.
