The Battery is at the hart of every full electric car and this makes the battle between Battery Swapping and Super Charging a very interesting one. Since both options have their benefits and major drawbacks.

Tesla has well over 25,000 superchargers in the US and over 6,000 in Europe and they are adding to these every single month at great speed.
At the same time NIO has only 200 swapping stations in China and is working together with Sinopec, the country’s largest gas station owner, to deploy 5,000 swapping stations over the next couple of years.

Right now the EV sector as a whole is still in its infancy and things like long term ownership effects have not even been studied on a global scale, like they have with petrol and diesel cars.

Battery swap business model is a genius idea. Battery maintenance will be another huge industry and ev manufacturers need to separate this from vehicles. Those old batteries will kill the used car markets and people will not buy Tesla anymore. People would just either lease or rent.

This is totally wrong. NIO cars can also charge at any fast charger. So the comparison is not fast charging vs battery swap; it is fast charging v battery swap+fast charging.

As a person who invested in Nio, I might be in a subjective position but this is my opinion. Let me explain why the battery swap system is a very good option for any ev in the market.
People keep comparing electric cars as old smart phones with replaceable battery and saying that battery swap for ev is unnecessary. Is there anyone who thinks that an electric vehicle is so cheap that if the battery doesn't charge well after several years of usage, it can be easily changed just like smart phones? Also, if you think vice versa, if some company releases some cheap and high-performance battery in the future, you probably need to take it the original ev dealer and probably will end up spending tens of thousands of dollars to replace it or if you can't afford to pay that much, you may need to throw that ev away. These days, battery technology is evolving every year, and if there is no easy way to upgrade the ev battery just like upgrading your hard drive or cpu for computers, it might be a lot more problematic sticking with just one built-in battery for your ev.

So, if I buy a NIO car today that is subscribed to battery swapping, I can still charge that same battery at home without having to depend on a going to a swap station giving me both options? If so, it's interesting this fact is overlooked a lot and should be emphasized by anyone making a fair analysis. thanks for this video.

Good analysis. Two points....when you say $11000 savings without the battery when you purchase NIO, the $5000 savings for higher resale price cannot be counted as the next owner need to pay for the swapping subscription unless the seller buy a new battery before selling the car. Also swapping does not mean new battery every time you swapped, is just 100% charged and not guaranteed the holding battery power will not drop as fast as a 5 year old battery. The thought of buying a new car with an old battery need to be overcome. Is like buy a new phone without battery and you can swap battery at a phone store everytime the battery runs dry instead of waiting for it to be charged for 30mins~1hrs for fast charging....you still getting a reuse battery and it might run low fast. What Tesla can do is just sell a new set of battery at a low price, maybe every 5 years.

I didn't know much about swap vs non-swap, but swap to me sounded like the obviously better choice, and this vid just confirmed that. My only issue with swapping is how does it affect car design? Would Tesla be able to make the cars they do with a swap system.

I'd imagine the biggest win for swap is that everyone can keep an extremely light "daily driver" that charges overnight for a 70 mile range. There wouldn't be any range anxiety because you could easily swap to a heavy 300 mile "trip car" when you actually need it. Lugging around an expensive 220 mile range battery would no longer be a thing and the sustainability of producing them at a mass scale would also be solved because you only need 10% of current demand.

With battery swapping you can replace your degraded battery easily and cheaply, how much would it cost to replace your battery for Tesla? It doesn’t make sense financially to not have your battery swappable.

swapping is better because their batery will always be at the best condition..furthermore id there is any new improvement in batery technology swapping will enable them to get access to it easily...

I do not think about swapping will succeed. You do not consider how the cost of swapping station which are quite high and who is going to invest. 4 mins is time for 1 car swapping and how waiting time for other cars have to wait as station is likely have only 1-2 charging units. Not include how the station have to store lot of different types of batteries. (even battery still not enough to produce EV car ). To let other car makers develop/adopt the standard battery, seem to me impossible.

swapping is 100% better. You will not be stuck having to replace the battery when it’s expired..
look at all the Nissan leaf cars running around that need batteries right now, but the cost of a replacement battery is more than the NADA Book value of the car..
NIO Electric cars are the way to go. You get something like six or eight free battery swaps per month which take about eight minutes to do, completely automated, you pull in to the battery swap place, and a machine removes your battery, and installs a fully charged fresh one. Or you can charge your battery at home..
because of the cost of batteries, I will never consider an electric vehicle until there is no alternative.
The cost of batteries is not going to come down over time because they are using cobalt, copper, and lithium as the main components of these batteries. That stuff ain’t cheap…

You can't simply say which one is better than the other: that totally depends. If you stand on the user side, battery swapping is absolutely preferred but in the investor's perspective battery swapping is too expensive for the company to make profits. That's why Tesla is making money while NIO is burning money without profit at all.

The only reason to not have swappable batteries is PROFITS , think about if all cars were swappable then third parties can supply batteries for several different makes and models, by making the batteries unique to each car they prevent others to selling batteries the consumer. Imagine if everything you owned like toys, remotes and others all had unique batteries then you are stuck buy batteries from the maker of such toy or remote . IF government standardized batteries shapes and sizes then it allows the consumer to have choices, This is why Tesla hates swappable units as they are afraid of losing money

Swapping battery better the car could charge at home and swapping went not home don’t have to wait 2-3 hours to charge outside the charge station is too danger to charge the car outside right now it not save
