This is the best set up for stealth camping. With practice you can strike camp in less than three minutes. As you stated in a previous video keep your gear tight by not leaving stuff strewn around you; use what you need and place it back in your pack.

The Hooch! My only shelter in the early ‘90s. We didn’t have bivy bags. Only what is now called the ranger roll. And of course that old heavy sleeping bag which always got left on the deuce. Only used when traveling at highway speeds in the back of the deuce. We were issued a bug net but it was too bulky we relyed on Deep Woods Off until one year they issued everyone an aerosol can of DDT. I used that stuff wisely and sparingly. I made it last a couple years. That stuff the best. That stuff was GRUNT (BUG) PROOF! No trees, no problem! Slide the large Alice pack a couple inches under the poncho and secure it to the ground on the other side. The waist pad on the frame with a small disposable hospital pillow wrapped in a brown T-shirt and you got yourself a Hooch Hilton!

From a grunt to a grunt! I approved. I build that Shelter with a 3x3m tarp.

Would love to see a video about how soldiers procure/purify water in the field.

For a field expedient wind/rain/cold WX protection I tied my shelter half off to the side of my Jeep. My poncho was used as a windbreak on the other side. It could be easily rolled up along the frame & secured if we had to move out fast. I did have e a bug net it was given to me by a GI who was wasn’t re-enlisting. It was 10 years old when I got it [1976] from the Vietnam era & still in good shape, & it did a great job keeping the bugs out as it had been treated with insect repellant. gave it away when I left the Army in 1980.

I traded a spare hutchie (Australian army tarp) for ACU poncho with a Wolfhound from the 25th ID and have found it to be one of the most versatile bits of kit I carry!
I drape it over my pack to keep it dry, use it as a blanket in a pinch and use it as rain gear in static positions.
I find it much better that our issued rain gear.

I carry the U.S. military poncho in my get home bag and planned to use it for shelter if need be. The bungee's are so obvious, but I never thought to use them for set up. Plus, the gortex bivey is a great idea.

My issue ponchos and poncho liner from 50 years ago were 63' x 90". After 40 years the ponchos disintegrated. Good Luck, Rick

Howdy! Good video! I have kept a couple of these ponchos from way back. I like to use them as you show and also together with a poncho liner as a "ranger roll".

Need to find a poncho and liner. Sleeping bag far too warm for spring and summer up here.

Would love to see a video on how troops acquire and treat water in the field.

Awesome video and shelter idea! Just what I was looking for. Straight to the point, very lightweight, easy to setup, multifunctional and good for stealth camping if you have camouflage gear like yours. I especially think the bungee cord is a good idea since I hate tying and playing with cords.

Great vid GP. I only wish I could still lay on the ground these days. (Old age & arthritis Ha) but I did get a DD tarp on your recommendation. Love it. Goes great with my hammock set up. Still camping and rucking. Old guy style. Lighter & slower Ha!
