Hello my saxophone friends! I thought it would be really important to make a play test comparison video of the Selmer Supreme Alto VS one of my favorite playing Selmer Mark VI altos that we have in the shop! The last comparison video I was comparing it with other modern altos, but we received a lot of requests to compare the Supreme with the king pin of the vintage Selmers: the Mark VI! I edited the transitions so that you can more closely keep the sound and tone in your head while I switch saxophones! I also tried to use the same mouthpiece setup and airstream on both saxophones as well as play the exact same things on each horn! I really hope you enjoy this comparison video and I would love to know your thoughts and opinions on the tone of each one!

Please comment below with what YOU hear 😆🙏🎷❤️👇

Is there a clear winner?

Great comparison, you sound amazing no matter the sax. I own myself a 5 digit Mark Vl, but being honest I like the sound on the Supreme in that clip a little more.

The main thing for me is how the sound reaches the player, it can be inspiring or not. Congratulations on your excellent videos, greetings from Brazil.

Volume is louder on the Supreme. Makes it seem to sound better.

They are both nice, but the VI without a doubt sounds richer.

Two great sounding horns and player of course .

They both sound good. The VI is more open sounding and the Supreme has a focused middy core sound going on.

Interesting thing is that the Supreme sounds different on the scale compared to the ornithology clip. VI sounds the same tonally in both.

What's the serial on the VI?

Beauty is in the ear of the beholder. Both sound great. This guy can play on a chair leg and make it sound good. Thank you – God bless – Bill – UK

I like the Supreme -change the mouthpiece, reed etc. and a whole new range of possibilities are available.
But I can say the same of the mark vi.

More character in the VI's sound. But this is one sample vs. one sample (and, of course, one player, one mpc...). I have found, however, that good Mark VI horns have a little extra "something" to their sound that the newer models can't match. There are so many variables, and so many different preferences among players; hopefully we're each lucky enough to find what works best for us.

I think both horns sound great. I just don't hear enough difference in the horns to want to deal with everything that comes with a vintage horn. Beautiful playing sir!

The vi as always sounds good it’s a classic, but to me the Supreme has its own thing going for it. I think it’s just a matter of people getting out of the mindset that the vi is the end all be all of saxophones, the supreme is here to set a new standard with refinements from the models that came before.

Someday, SOMEDAY, there will be a horn with a more solid sound than a MK VI. Today is not that day. But the Supreme sounds good.

I’m not a MK6 fanatic, but they are clearly one of the top saxophones ever created both in terms of sound and player comfort. Unfortunately collectors have artificially inflated the price of MK6s to absurd levels. Here, the first alto sounds a bit buzzier with a more complex core sound while the second is a bit louder but slightly less resonant.

I love Supreme 😅but is it straight out of the box, or needs adjustments? For that price 🤔

The Supreme is a bit louder but the VI definitely richer when you play. The VI was more in tune on the scale, which makes me think you are just more used to the VI. I like the VI better.

Kudos for the quality of the playing. Like others I have to give it to the Mark VI, the Supreme sounds a little bright in comparison. As always, it's all about personal taste.

The VI was more free blowing and definitely had more character. The Supreme was okay but it could be compared to any yamaha, or any other the newer horn. The ergonomics were better on VI as well as I can hear it in your technique. But you're a great player either way!

The VI has a really rich timbre, the supreme sounded a bit thin by comparison... but it also seems to have faster action ?

I don't quite get the people that say the Mark VI sounds richer or darker. To me the Supreme has that really thick, rich Reference sound; where as the Mark VI has the livelier, nimbler, more focused sound. At least to my ears that's how it sounds.
