Sitar Finger Placement

Looks like you had some fun with this one. I feel like since I play guitar a lot, that my calluses are pretty good for the sitar ( which I also play a lot). My problem is position of the sitar. You've seen some of my vids, so you know I am NOT a small guy. Weighed this morning at 365 lb. ( and that's me LOSING weight). Anyway, I CAN NOT get into the half lotus position. I sometimes play on the couch and let the sitar rest on the cushion beside me, which I saw Annouska Shankar do, so it MUST be OK. But most of the time I am sitting in my computer chair (or office chair). I frequently take it to work as I have about 40 minutes every hour to do whatever I want. That's another office chair. This position puts the neck in the wrong place in relation to my body and I am worried about learning to play 'out of position'. Do you think I should stop playing in these chairs? If you remember, my sitar doesn't have a big gourd. The sound box is about the same diameter but only 5 or six inches deep (electric you know). So even if I COULD get into the half lotus position, how would my particular sitar play out there? What do you think. I will surely appreciate your comment(s) if you have the time.

My teacher tells me everybody’s finger placement is different because every hand is different!
