Turkey elections: Erdogan defiant he can win election despite run-off prospect of run-off. Turkey looks to be heading for a landmark runoff presidential election after neither Tayyip Erdogan nor his rival Kemal Kilicdaroglu cleared the threshold to win outright. Turkey's Supreme Election Council this morning put Erdogan's share of the vote at 49.49 per cent and Kilicdaroglu at 44.79 per cent with almost all votes counted. Both sides had earlier claimed to be ahead  and contested the figures. Opinion polls before the election had pointed to a very tight race but gave Kilicdaroglu, 74, running on a secular platform as the head of a centre-Left six-party alliance, a slight lead. Two polls on Friday showed him above the 50 per cent threshold. But Erdogan, 69, overnight appeared to pull ahead as he seeks to extend his 20-year reign by another five years, and early this morning claimed he could still win outright.
