An Innovative New Form of Aquaculture | Ohio Sea Grant Research

Researchers Dr. Kevin Neves and Dr. Silvia Newell recently showed that a recirculating aquaponics system is more than capable of simultaneously raising Lake Erie yellow perch and crops like tomatoes and lettuce. Through what’s known as integrated multitrophic aquaculture, or IMTA, the system might be the key to the future of aquaculture in the Midwest.

(Clarification from Dr. Newell: While nitrate is a form of nitrogen that's "not harmful to anybody" at levels found in the study, it does actually become a danger to people at a concentration of 10 milligrams per liter.)

Awesome video, I've played with aquaponics about 10yrs ago and had great results back when I lived in Hawaii, but it was a very high maintenance system but non the less I was very proud of what I created! Now I live in Nevada. Unfortunately it would cost too much to heat the water in winter and chill the water in summer. so now I grow in my garage with a small DIY hydro system. I always a place in my heart for Aquaponics Aloha Dean

They should try Mississippi grass shrimp, they’re native to Ohio. If they can get the nauplii to live they will have a great trophic level benefit there. I do this with other animals and I’m trying to get those shrimp to work for me but I can’t get them past nauplii. There is a study “biological means of increasing productivity of ponds” very old, but the last chart on the report is fantastic. They did trophic level studies, very useful for bass pond and is applicable to this. Use complex structure, simple structure (jargon) for breeding and living space, and then as a hunting tool for higher trophic levels, respectively.

Great video—lots of valuable information! We're currently upgrading our aquaponics program, and I have one question: Do you have a solids lifting system in the fish tank to transfer solids to the crayfish, or are the crayfish placed directly in the fish tank? have you tried using invasive carp as a potential protein input/wild fish replacement for salmon/trout?

Hello,
Nice video, do you think this kind of close system can work in cold weather like Washington state?
How about cost of energy? Do you need to warm the water during winter?
It’s is posible to visit your project?

Great to see this. But the method is not new? As it has been implemented for decades in some countries

So what did we learn that wasn't already learned in the study conducted by the University of the Virginia Islands in the 80s? Is there a link to the actual data?

I would like to be a part of this. How can i learn more.

Now where are you getting fish feed from? Is that a safe sustainable source? How much does the feed cost? Will the system collapse if prices for the products and imputs fluctuate more than 5%?

This is great stuff! I want to learn, can I come visit your facility? Would love to get a system set in Flippin & Yellville AR

Love how I’m the 666th to like the video haha I absolutely love this idea! I was a big time aquarist for many years and I love how it can be used to actually feed people and at the same time preserve our natural ecosystems. I will definitely be incorporating this system into my future farm enterprise

Open ocean sea farm is huge because ocean is powerful if it is moving the growth rate is supper and guard the ocean at the same time. China had moving fish farm as sea mihe counter measure is smart
