I liked the old water wheels with slanted teeth and the water flow physics. A small detail that gave a bit of realism.

It's all about that aesthetic engineering

Honestly I think it's a good change because in the past all of my stress farms using water wheels ended up just looking like an engine from a car because it would mostly be encased by buildings so that I can get every single block of the water wheel
At least now it encourages you to put it in a river since you're not punished for only having one part of the water wheel having water flowing

I would imagine if somebody made a farm around that SU hack and after the update it all overstress

I honestly love the new ones because one thing I hated about the old ones is there was no way to have a realistic setup with a water divert from a river or anything (Google water wheel house to see an example) you just had a box with water with it and now you can have an actual setup that feels realistic without it sacrificing performance

Edit: also water wheels in real life usually only have one flap being hit by water at a time
Edit 2: yes I know the actual physics is less realistic, but it rewards having a more realistic looking setup instead of the box design everyone used before that was very unrealistic and uncreative, like I just recently made a cute water wheel house that I never would have made before because it only would have generated like 50su

I wish they added the new large wheel while leaving the smaller one alone. I love the fact that the water wheel used to go slower when the water flowed on it in the wrong direction. It was always so satisfying to just tap the wheel on the side twice with a wrench and watch your machine double in speed within seconds. I'll miss that :(

If you already have soul sand you can easily afford better setup than just waterwheel spam

quick tip! you can take advantage of the big waterwheel's stress capacity and the small one's speed by using them alongside each other! (literally connecting them by their shaft and placing them next to flowing water)

Large water wheel is basically just regular water wheel with a 1:2 gear ratio

There should be a 'Directional Water Wheel' thats just essentially the old one.

I like the new ones because with the old ones, you were essentially forced to hide them underground or something, because the maximum efficiency setup is pretty ugly. But now you can relax, and actually knclude the water wheels in your aesthetic while also being functional

I have never seen this mod before today since these shorts hit my feed, and it looks so interesting to figure out how all this stuff works.

You should include the fact that, with the new water wheels, you can add 1 small wheel to a large wheel, or group of large wheels, and increase their rotational speed while keeping the SU of the larger wheels.

My only complaint about the new water wheels are that, they are so SLOW

I love the new set up. So much less pressure to hack it into max efficiency. A while ago when I tried Create for the first time, I was in Creative and trying to figure out the setup. I had water flowing down a cliff and hid soul sand in the wall and put trapdoors in to make the water flow kind of backwards (back towards the wall, and into the next set of wheels). It was Stressful. Now its a clear, yet subtle, indicator that if you're worried about efficiency, then you need to go up to a Steam Engine.

I do think the old model could have still fit. Slanted teeth, make sure it's facing the right way or it doesn't move at all. Then maybe when my water starts flowing all wonky because I'm working on flat piece of river, my wheels don't break because they're moving in opposite directions. But I'm happy with the new setup.

that's an amazing compromise, they removed an unintentional thing, replaced it with a fixed version, and gave an option to get something better later on that's better than the broken hack of the original
only thing i want to see now is an "old/ancient" version of the waterwheel that has the old design and changes nothing else, or a way to change the model manually back to the old design and have one for the new big wheel as well, for the slanted teeth look
perhaps by using the wrench or some other tool you could shift click the wheel and change its appearance

So, basically regardless of the amount, it's produces 256 and 512 respectively. A shame cause me and my friend played create back in 1.16.5 like over a year ago and we learned this trick, and tried to execute it in the latest version 1.19.2 and well, we were met with this disappointment, trying to figure it out why we weren't getting over 256. We ended up making the large water wheel immediately after us noticing this

You could actually place the soul sand a block down and it would power on all sides
