You make it so complicated. I got 11/3 in seconds, just by adding 1 to both sides and multiplying both sides by 4/3.

3/4m = 1.75 + 1 = 2.75

.75m = 2.75
m = 2.75/.75
m= 275/75= 11/3

m = 11/3 = 3 2/3

Multiplied all terms by 4/1 which gave me:

3m - 4 = 7
+4 to both side.
3m = 11
Divide both sides by 3

An interesting point if asked in a problem--the exact answers are the radicals, 11/3 or 3 2/3. The decimal answers with denominators of 3 are

(3/4)m - 1 = 7/4

(3/4)m = 11/4

3m = 11

m = 11/3

I did this in my head in 10 seconds. First, change 1.75 into fraction form 7/4
Then add 1 to both sides.
3/4 m = 11/4
Multiply by 4 to clear the fraction
3m = 11
m = 3
Don't work with fractions and decimals in the same problem.

Shouldn’t he have divided both sides by 3/4 So m = 11/4 / 3/4 then m 11/4 x 4/3 m= 44/12 so m = 11/3 or 3 and 2/3?

Okay, forget analogies about treating the equals sign like a see-saw or whatever. That obscures what's really going on. Treat it like an equals sign. Why do we need to do unto one side as we do unto the other? Because we need to keep it *true* that the two sides are equal. Behold:
x + 4 = 2 + 3
[Spoiler alert: x = 1. Keep that in mind.]
Let's get rid of that 4 by subtracting it from the left.
x = 2 + 3
One equals five? Obviously that's not a true statement. Let's do the same to the right.
x = 2 + 3 − 4
One equals five minus four? Yep, we still have a true statement. We've moved stuff around but we've kept the equals sign valid.
