In The Sims 3, Laundry was first introduced in The Sims 3: Ambitions.
Whenever a Sim is changing clothes, Sims will leave piles of clothes behind them. If there's a hamper in the same room where the sim is changing clothes, they'll go directly into the hamper. before doing laundry, the Sim will first collect the clothes from all hampers available on the lot before putting them all in the washing machine. Sims will put detergent automatically. After the clothes are done washing, you can transfer them to the dryer. After the clothes are finished drying, they'll always come out folded.
Another option for drying clothes is placing them on a drying rack. When using the drying rack, Sims will place all the clothes at once.

The Sims 3: Ambitions added a Laundromat, new type of community lot where Sims go to wash their clothes. You can visit the laundromat to wash and dry your dirty clothes. The price for a cycle of washing a drying will depend on the cost of the machines. The process of washing and drying is exactly the same.

Sims 4
in The Sims 4, laundry was introduced with The Sims 4: Laundry Day Stuff. Whenever a Sim is changing clothes, they'll leave piles of clothes behind them. Unlike Sims 3, you only need one hamper on the lot in Sims 4. Wherever Sims are changing clothes, it will go directly into the hamper.
In The Sims 4, you now have two options for washing clothes, one of them is the standard washing machine. Sims can watch the clothes being washed and dried. But they can become dazed in the process. The animation for the washing machine is similar to the one in real life. You can see the cycles of washing and rinsing . After the laundry is done washing, Sims can transfer them to the dryer. After the clothes are done drying, Sims can put away the laundry immediately, they can also place them down first, before putting them away.

The Sims 4: Laundry Day Stuff also has washtubs for hand-washing laundry. Sims that are washing clothes by hand will gain Fitness skill by doing it. Another option for drying clothes is The clothesline. Unlike The Sims 3, Sims will hang the clothes on the clothesline part by part. The clothes will slightly move from the wind. The clothes will be dry after 12h

In the Sims 4, the clothing line wires can sometimes snap and will need to be repaired. But you can upgrade them to be unbreakable.

IIRC, in Sims 3, if you leave the washed clothes in the washing machine for too long, it would get stuck in it, and sims would have a hard time pulling them out. Also, cheap washing machines can get noisy and shake more violently, and sims can try to subdue it. They would get a positive moodlet (Victory Over Washer) if they succeeded or a negative moodlet (Defeated by Washer) if they failed.

I think Sims 1 and 2 don’t have a laundry mechanic because Sims can use only one normal outfit.

I've noticed that in Sims 3, the washing machines are all top loaders, whereas in Sims 4, they are front loaders. Also there is a total of seven different washer and dryers you can buy in Sims 3. But there are only two options in Sims 4. One of them being a single washer or dryer by themselves. The other is buying them as a set, with the dryer stacked on top.

You forgot that extra detail in the Sims 4 about the hampers. When a Sim is wet from the rain or been in a pool and you change the clothes, you'll see water dripping out of the hamper.

Sims with very low hygiene or stinky clothes if left on the floor for too long, you'll see a cloud of musk in the hamper.

Same with the clothes that it's been fragranced (Butterflies) and fouled (Flies).

It can have a uncomfortable moodlet if Sims are nearby to it, but it's bugged cause even if you put the dirty/wet clothes into the washing machine, the uncomfortable moodlet will still be there. But there's a workaround to fix that, just go into build and buy mode, put the hamper into the household inventory, and then manually put it back and the uncomfortable moodlet is gone.

Sims 3 is just way more easier for me to do myself of their very own laundry for some reasons.

I was so shocked to see in sims 3 the clothes just magically appeared on the line. 😂
And that sims 4 actually had very decent animations for it. Not to mention the additional gameplay mechanics it has.

To be fair, laundry in TS3 was part of an expansion pack (IMO it should’ve been paired with University). TS4 is a stuff pack.

IIRC, certain expansion packs gave you new laundry items in TS3.

I like cleaning things in TS4, it feels more "homey". And with doing so, i enjoy doing laundry and vacuuming. Previously I preferred to dry sims clothes outside on the strings, but since weather in my game hates me as much as the real one, i have raining all the time, so dryer it is ;-;

Laundry in the sims 4 is actually frustrating. Clothes would never line dry because it would always start raining first!
