Damn, I guess Nix and Nixos are so unique they didn’t make notice for this list, it needs some more support they put alot into that system.

I do agree with DT, when he said that many distros should really be scripts that you can run, like his own DTOS.

Though I do also agree that we need these independent/innovative distros too.

I often say "there's too many distros" but truly what I mean is "there's too many fluff distros."
If you've got something valuable to offer, by all means go for it.

finally someone talks about bedrock. it's one of my favorite linux concepts.

Have you seen the T2 Linux project? René Rebe is a mad developer that's been putting linux on all sorts of old hardware that we typically wouldn't see a modern use for.

One thing that deserves a mention in this "unique distros" category is intel's clear linux, it does a lot of interesting and very unique things, changes the way the whole system is structured and is actually able to perform better as a result of this as well. And another one would be chromiumOS i guess, it's still a linux distro - albeit a very weird one, I think it deserves a spot on the list.

Little note, Kali isn't exclusively focused on pentesting, also on a variety of relatively adjacent fields, such as forensic analysis.

People were saying that since before some of today's most popular distros existed, I'm glad distro developers did not listen.

Imagine if there was only one operating system and no competitors to force it to become better and everyone would need to go by its bad decisions...

And I would love to see more Distros based on ooenSUSE Tumbleweed.
Cutting edge and stable with one of the biggest repos

Could you make a video that explains exactly how android works in comparison to standard linux distros? A lot of us probably know the basics of it but it'd be awesome to have a more detailed technical breakdown.

Brodie, that's what I am saying all the time too! People argue that we have too many distributions. I argue back, that we have too many meaningless distributions. But, and this is a big Butt, we have too little meaningful distributions. More means more competition. Linux and the eco system is meant to be hackable, customizable and modular. It is meant to create your own environment. And people just share their environment.

I just remembered your streams where you did Linux from Scratch. Have you ever finished that?

Personally not a big fan of using distrobox as a glorified "package manager". It essentially is taking bloat and raising it to a power of infinity, may as well use a VM to install your packages.

Yes, i know it's not what distrobox is for, but some people might think that its the "new shiny" way to install applications, which it really is not unless you need cross-distro compatibility or something.

I want a gnu linux distro with full focus on wine support.. I dont understand the point of being in 2023 and it is still something you have to manually install and sort of ensamble

I really want a Distro similar to SteamOS and Plasma Big Screen, but based on a modified Gnome interface. I've really wanted a good home console and media center based distro, but they are all either strictly media or strictly gaming. I want the app drawer in Gnome to open when I hit the home button and each application to open in their own dedicated workspace similar to the mobile phone version of gnome, but with support for a remote using arrow key navigation between context elements like buttons and text boxes.

I'd love to see a convergence of features where someone takes the best ideas from multiple distros and makes an uber-distro.

SteamOS uses a form of AB root too, where it installs updates to the one not in use and swaps the one that gets booted after an update completes.

Not sure, but it feels like Clear Linux deserves a place in this list too, it has it's own unique package(/system) manager, uniquely tweaked filesystem and some optimisations improving performance.
It powers my server and the laptop I gave my father, to see how he'd manage on some easy to use (except for the initial setup) Linux system, half a year in he only struggled with scanning documents.

My favourite distro is Garuda Linux, while it's literally just a form of (weirdly) pre-configured Arch Linux with their Chaotic-AUR repo layered on, after some small setting tweaks I find the OS incredibly pleasant to use.
I'm using the over-the-top Dr460nized edition, it's theme being much nicer in actual use than I expected and the shell tweaks varying from fun to incredibly useful (λ please garuda-update).

I agree that more distros with a propuse are needed, however, I think that shouldn't be the primary way to develop new functionality, if affects kinda the core of the way to do things, like abroot, inmutability, package management or drivers, new DE, sure, that can work in a certain point and should be a valid distro to work with and allow improvements to the primary base distros, but a distro that "simplify" something that can be done installing apps, extensions, third party repo or compile the code that does not affects any of the core functionality of the distro, shouldn't justify to build a distro around those changes and leave it unmaintained in the future and without a good practice to adapt it to a primary distro. The distro list should have a label or tag that give more information for the end user and make sure not install them on a regular basis or if is not intended for a daily use distro or is intended to development only, also pointing out those that are distros with just cosmetic customizations, so at the end, everyone will focus the time and effort to use the "right software". Bonus point, if the future is to simplify things, customizations should be as well, I like that Linux mint for example has a way to install themes and maybe gnome or xfce can learn from them, instead of downloading files from gnome-look, downloading zip files and not being as standard to customize (I get that DE's has different implementations of their code and how to read certains customizations, but still, a standard way to download and install them without a hastle, will be good), so with all this, distro forks that adds themes and customizations will get discard, plus, the time to build a whole distro just for that, is kinda a waste of time.

I personally love the idea of what ublue is doing with the immutable distros
