Orientalism, a critical concept in postcolonial studies and cultural criticism, was developed and popularized by Edward Said in his 1978 book "Orientalism." It refers to the way Western culture and scholarship have historically viewed and depicted the cultures of the East (or the Orient), often based on assumptions of Western superiority and Eastern inferiority.
