How to change the Scrollbar width in Windows 11/10

What happens when a person with fat fingers touches a scroll bar, trying to move it up or down or across. Little success he gets, isn’t it? This has been the problem bothering some people for a long while working on touch-sensitive Windows laptops or tablets. The Scroll bar is a vertical or horizontal bar that appears when scrolling the content. It is visible to the extreme sides of the screen and sometimes at the bottom of the screen. If you find the Windows scroll bar hard to see or to use, you can if you wish, change the Scrollbar width.

Here’s how you can change the scroll bar width in Windows 11/10.

Timecodes:
0:00 Intro
0:24 Registry Editor procedure

It worked with a restart. I increased it to -350 and now it's twice the width. regedit is one word without spaces. I'm glad to find this because with a new computer I lost the app that did this.

Minor detail: a restart is required to make it take effect. I increased the with by 50%, decided it looked fat so increased it by 25% and it now looks very much like Windows used to appear on VGA screens. My hit rate with my finger is now vastly improved, my gripe was that Windows misjudged my intent and brought the window behind to the foreground, so I'd need to use the task bar to return to the application I was using. It happened often enough that I would curse it.

Doesn't work at all for Edge browser in Windows 10. It does change for other programs though, just not for Edge

How a.b.s.o.l.u.t.e.l.y stupid that microsoft makes us go into the REGISTRY to change the width of the scroll bar. Thats just inviting disaster. Screw up the REGISTRY and non-techies like me will be putting our PCs in the shop to fix

Thank you for this. Could you say what to change the -255 to to make it wider?

You should tell what the units are and what the normal setting is.

Not working for me, no matter what number I change it to it still stays the same

The number changed from -250 to -800 in the scroll bar width line. The scrollbar width itself, after restart remained exactly the same width. What's with that???

Only works on some apps like Microsoft Office and Adobe. Doesn't work for Edge and Explorer :(

Changed both from default -255 to -500 and it didn't change anything

Great! Now if we could only change the color as in Windows 3.1. 🙂

Fantastic. Now that I’m here in the registry, I am provided no reference number to which I should alter the standard -225 I currently have for a window scroll bar width. Thanks for no suggestion whatsoever as to what I might use to change the slider width to something akin to what is standard in, say, for instance, Windows 10. Thanks for nothing.

Rosie - I agree and that's exactly why I didn't try to change it. Get a clue Microsoft!
